Default Surprising info on the 83 944

I was reading through my May, 1982 Car and Driver reviewing the new 84 944. I had read the article before but missed the comparison with the 83 Corvette, Alfa Romeo GTV-6, and the Toyota Supra.

Fastest 1/4 mile: 944
Fastest 0-60: 944
Best mileage: 944
70-0 braking: Alfa
Most expensive: 944

So for all you folks saying the NA is a slow car, it certainly wasn't in 1983.

I don't have a flat bed scanner to make a pdf? I've made some Hi-Res photos of the pages but to post them @ 200kb they would be impossible to read. Maybe I'll check at work for a good scanner; that would be the best by far.

Thats freaking awesome, but not totally true. There is no such thing as an 83 vette. Only 82 and 84, and the 84 is marginally quicker, but the 82 would eat dust. Oh and almost all 84's are automatic.

I googled it to see how much faster the 44 was but to my suprise found that information.

After 3 years with an 83, and the love mellowing a little, I say it's a car that acts like a running back with asthma. It's built to go fast, it feels like it could be fast, it has everything you need to go fast...but wheezes around.

I tried my uncle's new S2 yesterday. I was amazed at how it wanted to pull- the flywheel was lighter, etc. I would've thought that a longer stroke and more rotating mass would make the 3L lazier- I was wrong.

That said, the 83 feels like a light sports car (man. steering), and the S2 like a tank. Combine the 3L engine and the rest of my car, and...

I'm no Corvette expert for sure. They must have used the 82 although they don't say for sure.

944: 0-60= 7.5 sec. 1/4 mile= 15.7 @ 87 mph

Vette : 0-60= 8.0 sec. 1/4 mile= 15.9 @ ? mph

No, the slave cylinder failed before they got to 3rd gear

Around the same time as that article, Road & Track did an interesting comparison of the 944, the 928, the Vette and a Ferrari 328. Although obviously not the fastest, the 944 was their pick for the all around best car.

Actually that was 2 years before my time... Maybe in my past life I died in an 84 vette that couldn't get out of its own way...

Wow I'm suprised it beat the vette in 0-60 and 1/4. My grandmother passed away this morning and going through here things I found a brochure from 89 of the mazda mx-6. That little 110hp beast got to 60 in 7.4sec.
