Just a little update...

Right after making this thread, I removed it and reinstalled it with the black high-bond (I think, I don't remember what it said, but it was the better quality tape) and increased the L-brackets to a total of 8. It has lasted through the summer, including several 100-degree days. That heat was my biggest concern.

I still don't know how it'll hold up to the heat of a DE in the middle of summer, but since I don't see myself doing too many of those (timing for the next few years and then after that I'll be running a different car as my main DE-er) I consider this project to be a success.

hey, BB, how are the little L brackets attached to the valance? And to the car?

Thanks for the update.

If you look at the links in post #15, you'll see that I put tape on the outside of the "L". I just removed the tape and stuck it in the corner between the lip and the underside of the front airdam.

For the actual proceedure, I peeled the tape cover back from one side of the "L", pressed the unpeeled side against the front lip and moved the bracket up to adhere it to the underside. Then I peeled back the rest of the tape cover and pressed it against to the lip. I hope that's clear, 'cuz I really have no other way to describe it.

I found something a bit more durable (IE, flexable) for those looking to do this. Use coping for tile floors. You know, the stuff that sticks to the wall and covers the edge of the tiles. I have a spare valance i am probably going to pop rivet the stuff on. Its almost perfect as its very heavy duty stuff but flexible enough that it probably wont get ripped off if you hit something. The garden edging is alot cheaper to buy though.

It also has a nice raised edge on the bottom..

I know the stuff you are talking about. But how will that raised edge play with the bends around the valance? I can see them flexing up or down...

Since this thread was mentioned in another one, I'll go ahead and post a 5-year update.

So far, it has held up really well. I took a blown tire retread hit at speed two or three years ago and it stayed on. I did redo the center section of tape where it hit to be on the safe side but, if nothing else, it survived the rest of the trip home.

The only other repair I had to do was a little over a year ago when I was backing out of my driveway, turning, and I dragged it along a snow bank because I misjudged things. Pulling at it from that direction made it come off more but, again, it was a really easy fix.

I have toyed with putting in little black screws along the way but I have decided that the tape is working wonderfully. If I have to fix something every few years, well, that's ok. It's easy enough to do.

All in all, I'm really pleased with this DIY lip.

I bought a FOHA front lip from an old SCCA 944 racecar guy for $60 bucks, and then sold it the next day to my buddy Mike for $100.

I kind of have some regrets for selling it for just $100 since I know I could have easily tripled my profit, but I'm glad it ended up on my good buddy Mike's car..!

Looking at doing this myself - along with a simple plywood splitter. Sort of an NA batwing with the rubber lip in front, plus guides to stop air entering the wheel wells at the front.

Other than garden edging I've heard conveyor belt material is good as it is reinforced. Any other tips?

Just went to 2 different home depots... Neither had any garden edging besides a $27 roll of 20ft of really wide edging, like 4"+... Wtf.

I used some rolled-up edging for the lip. It was probably the same stuff you saw. I just had to trim it down.

Oh, and as long as we're updating things, it's still holding up.

You may be able to find a shorter roll somewhere along the way. I think I only spent $15 for the roll I bought but that was years ago.

Inflation lol. I might end up buying one of those eBay universal stick on lips that cost 10 bucks and look pretty nice.
