Default Where to for oil changes?

Just got nicked for almost $200 at a dealer for an oil/filter change...is this necessary? Is there anything terribly wrong with taking it to your run of the mill oil changing place or even a dealer of another car make that doesn't charge as much per hour? I don't mind paying for the expertise for the important stuff, but if it's not necessary, I'd just as soon put the extra $150 into gas, tires or gratutious car detailing accessories.

200 is insane. Buy filters online, pickup high quality oil and you are set. Run your car for 10 mins, Jack up your car, drain the oil, take off the filter, put new filter on, refill oil. 25 mins and prob 40 bucks in parts max.

I know, I'd like to do it myself, but live in Manhattan, so I can't exactly jack the thing up on my block.

Oil changes on a 944 are very easy. All the thing you need are ramps, filter wrench, drain pain, filter and oil. I've only gone to an oil change place once, this was the old daily driver Saturn, and they put the wrong filter on... all the oil went into the street and more fun, so my rant of a lesson here is do it youself.

Your welcome to drive out to my place and do it here. I live about 30 minutes from Manhattan... exit 43 on the LIE. $220 is insane. Just give me a few bucks to cover the oil disposal.

Try S&M in New Hyde Park next time you need some work done.

lol, that sucks. Oil change costs me I think 35 bucks, something like that, got the oil filter from paragon. bought a couple so I don't have to order one next time, saves on shipping cost. And oil I just use Castrol GTX 20w50.

was it a synthetic oil change? even a synthetic oil change shouldnm't be 200 bucks.

maybe it's a shop that charges 1 hour minimum or something. 100-120 / h? but then supplies still wouldn't cost 80-100 bucks.

Where do you park it? Do you have a garage or is it outside?

I doubt the neighbors would mind you having your car jacked for less than a half hour..

Just bring in a Porsche or Mahle filter, and a drain plug seal from Porsche, and make sure the place sells the oil you'd like to use -- you should be fine. Of course, then there is the story of an old friend of mine who bought a 4x4 toyota truck -- back when they were the rage. He brought it to a quickie oil change place, and they sent him on his with the drain plug loose. Oil dropped out after a block and toasted the motor by the time he figured out what happened. They did buy him a new motor eventually, but you never know. Somewhere a Porsche dealer's probably done the same thing I suppose...

64.67 US Dollars. Most I've paid for an oil change I didnt do myself.
And that was a check up too.

Even when I end up paying for my oil change at the mechanic's (usually the result of them doing work that requires it or just because it's already in the shop and I'm feeling lazy) it's still only $75 for a change using Mobil 1. $200 is waaaaayyy too much.

Unless it's really that difficult, I'd just do it where you live. Or just drive to another parking lot and do it there.

BB.

What a ripoff. It makes me upset to see how some dealers take advantage of Porsche owners. For chrissake, it's a plain jane oil change, not a timing belt job.

Hey Tazio, read up on here, meet people and do as much as you can on your own or with help from other Rennlisters. That's what we're here for. It shouldn't cost you $200 to change the oil in your 944. That's just ludicrous.
