Knocking from cam tower

One other (sort of) easy thing to check, especially if you're planning to pull the cam tower anyway.

I was having the same symptoms and fears, and found that thread while trying to diagnose the sounds. Mine wasn't quite as bad as the one above, but still enough to allow about 4-5 degrees of movement between the cam and gear. Definitely made a racket, and much closer in sound to rod knock than lifter clatter.
