Depends on the condition of LSD.
88 NA with LSD is the Holy grail of stock 944 boxes for spec racers. Short 5th plus LSD... what is not to like.
How much... really depends on what someone is willing to pay. I will give you this. For 944 spec guys. Long 5th gearboxes are $200-$250ish. Short 5th gears alone have been picked up fo $500. So full box is $500-600. Downside is shipping is costly compared to a couple gears. LSD? all depends on the condition. Bare used LSD units tend to be sold for $500. Then they need to be installed. For a stock LSD, with 90k on it in a short 5th box. Hmm maybe $1000. I have an open diff and would love an LSD in my race car.
Problem is at that price I personally start thinking about just buying a new Guard LSD and putting that in my existing short 5th gearbox. That way I know the LSD is 100% and I can chose my ramp rates and all. The factory LSD's do wear down and that is the big risk. Here is the heiherachy of diffs in 944 spec
1) Open diff - Sucks, but you can go surprisinly fast without one if you tune the chassis properly
2) Unrebult factory LSD - Nice and can help, but if worn may no do much of anything.
3) Rebuilt Factory LSD - Nice and works pretty well.
4) Guard Custom ramp rate LSD = The best LSD you can get. Makes a big difference, but costly as well
5) Welded diff = cheap and effective, but may cause handling issues since it is "aways locked".
My choice is one day to get #4. I just don't have money so I live with #1 and do my best. I have considred #2, but I am worried about getting an old worn one that will not work much anyway. I could rebuild, but at that price it might just be better to go all way with #4.

One thing I want to add is my estimates were taked assuming the entire gearbox with LSD in it is being sold. USED LSD alone.. $500, LSD inside short 5th NA box $1000 maybe.

I think a new Guard unit is about $1500 or so. I forget what I have heard.

Can the factory LSD be rebuilt? Its clutch type right? What are you looking at for a rebuild?
I feel the exact same way about the used LSD. To me, i feel like its like putting on dirty underwear after you shower.

Last time I checked with Guard, the 944 series LSDs were around $1750.
The factory ZF LSDs are all interchangeable. Early 944 units supersede to the Turbo part number, which supersede to the Turbo S part number. Yes they can all be rebuilt - BUT, depending on what version you have, only the Turbo S LSD internals are still available from Porsche. So if you do not have a Turbo S LSD, you must replace the earlier pressure cups with the Turbo S cups (2 of them @ approx $150 ea). So, it will cost $4-500 in just parts to refresh an early (non-Turbo S) LSD.
I have not checked with Guard to see if any of their internals will fit a factory ZF housing. That may be a means of rebuilding a factory ZF LSD, and getting the custom lock rates of a Guard LSD. Even if its possible, its probably going to be more $ than replacing with Factory parts (?).
There is a method of checking the condition of the LSD. In addition to a visual inspection of the friction discs and the ramps on the pressure cups, the FSM shows how to check the slip/break away torque. It specifies a factory tool to do this (of course), but its possible to rig up a fixture with the LSD in a vise to check it. I tore apart a 135k LSD unit (non-S Turbo), and it was still locking within the factory spec range. I think you really need to abuse the trans (never change the fluid) and/or severe race conditions to wear a 944 ZF out prematurely (some of the 964 and 993 LSD units have had premature wear problems).
Just to avoid confusion, when I refer to an LSD - its the differential only, not the transmission with an LSD installed.

I am also looking to upgrade to an LSD in my 88 924s for ITS racing.
Don't know much about these.
what about the Quaife? where do I find the guard LSD?
I have heard 8 hours of labor to install into my short fifth box? so that is another $700 on top of the dif correct?
Any one with LSD for sale is welcome to PM me with a price and location so I can weigh all my options.
Thanks SteveP

I have a 150K mile road-driven LSD that I've tracked and a Factory rebuilt Turbo S trans w/ 10-15K on it that I've driven spiritedly and I can not notice any difference in lock. Both chirp the the inside tire on a tight turn under power - rolling from a stop. Only difference I could tell is the old trans has sig. louder pinion gear whine.
