This thread got me thinking tonight. https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/349595-am-i-nuts.html
What if we had a map that showed the location of fellow water coolers? Could be useful for several things, but for this instance would help someone who was traveling and could run into the possibility of needing either a hand, a part or just a fellow lister to relax with for a few hours before hitting the road again.
So, I went about thinking....why not a web page? Well that wouldn't work if someone was traveling and didn't have access to the net. What about a database? Well that would need some kind of reporting and a map as well. then I thought, why re-invent the wheel.....why not use Google Earth instead?
So I hoped on the application (free also) and started to pay around. If you have Google Earth you can open up the attached file. I figured it might be good to have a list of parts places, their contact info and where they are located at.
So I created a 944 folder, Parts folder.
Added Parts places to the Parts folder, gave them a seperate thumbnail.
Added myself to the 944 folder and gave this folder a seperate color thumbnail.
Thumbnails can but turned on or off
My thinking is that this would be completely voluntary, but the minimum information can be provided by each person. I can updated it every other day as we begin the process and provide a place for it to be downloaded by anyone.
zip code
Vehicle year
Vehicle model
Rennlist ID or any other contact info is optional.
Any thoughts? This could be useful for anyone really, even the air cooled guys
Well let me know what anyone thinks.

Well anyone who is interested in providing information go ahead and e-mail porschemaps@yahoo.com. Put in the subject Porsche Map
Provide any information you wish. If this goes over, I'll xpost to the other forums and other Porsche sites.
I'll check the e-mail at least once a day for a while and update the map according.

Sounds real cool, and i just tried out that file, works great. Google earth is a great program for it too, there's so much you can do with it that hardly anyone knows about... count me in.
As far as updates while people join up, would it just be you updating the above file and us re-downloading it?
Also, if this becomes a popular maybe you can get it parked on top of the forum, or maybe PM's with the info would be a little bit better..?

I'm still learning about the software, so bear with me. I think that in order to be useful we should put the file in one place though. Otherwise there might end up being 50,000 versions. lol I have access to hosting so putting the file up on a web server isn't a problem, nor is bandwidth.
I'm open to any and all suggestions as to how this can be useful or how best to go about it. I had first thought to use MS streets & trips or Mappoint, but those cost money and didn't think this would go over if people had to buy software to use it. If it's free then more people are more likely to use it or think it's useful.

The 928 guys have this: http://www.frappr.com/porsche928ers and it lets you have a comment and pic.
I think it would be easier than a zip file that has to be uploaded a million times

Similar thing to the 928 one. but with the 928 one you have to be online to even open it. With this one you might not get details, but you can open it up without having access to the internet.
Have a list of dealerships now too. All 199 of them. Will get them added to the map with a seperate thumbnail & folder.
also added recommended repair shops.

Got everyone added that sent in something to this point. I need some thoughts/input.
Changes:
Changed parts places to be an Orange flag instead of a thumbtack.
Still to do:
Import US Porsche dealers into dealers folder & assign correct icon.
PM me any idea's/suggestions. I will get this uploaded to a web server tomorrow or Tuesday so anyone can download the latest & greatest instead of me taking up John's speed/bandwidth.
