Is it a plug and play swap? someone on pelican may want to buy my turbo trans to put into an NA. Can someone please inform me what is needed.. if anything.. to fit the turbo trans into the NA. Also, are the gear ratios the same?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

i have read in the past that the gear ratios are not the same, and actually bad for the n/a

Depending on the year of the NA it can be plug and play, but the much longer final drive in the 951 unit will destroy any last bits of NA performance. It is really a bad idea. Even the S2 gearbox in a 2.5L NA will hurt performance although by not as much.

Gear ratios are higher and I don't believe its bad for the n/a especially if you want a stronger tranny that will last as long as the engine and better gas mileage. If you are building a track car, you wouldn't want to do it. It will bolt directly into your n/a and if you are putting it in an early all you have to do is remove the early mounts and bolt it on the turbo tranny. I had a turbo tranny in my 85.5 n/a because they are stronger and I got better mileage without noticeable difference in acceleration on the streets. I felt a much bigger difference going from 15" wheels to 17". I am willing to bet if someone drove my n/a with the normal tranny versus my n/a with a turbo tranny, they won't know the difference if I didn't tell them.

For anyone who is going to comment on the feel/difference in gear ratio and power, make sure you HAVE DRIVEN a n/a with a turbo tranny first and not pass misinformation.

Can I come down and try?

Michael, ask Nurnur as he had one years ago with a turbo tranny and didn't know it. Come down if you have time as I am doing major cleaning after spending $2500 in concreting the whole front yard so I have space to park my 25ft minibus and 24ft enclosed trailer.

Looking at the numbers, I thought 5th would be pretty much unusable at highway speeds, and that was the big reason not to get one. I heard that people were left with 4 usable gears at normal speeds.

FWIW, Genikz and I just popped in a 944S transaxle (same as Turbo box except for final drive and 5th gear) in my early and it fits and works like a charm. Like Lego says, just swap the tranny mounts.

Whoever told you that only 4 gears are usable is lying to you. Lets hear it from people who have tried it.

I liked the 951 tranny for autocrossing. I could hold my second gear longer and was faster in many sections than an NA car with the original transmission.

Andy, I think there is a myth going around about n/a cars with turbo trannies being really slow. How does the car feel to you during normal street driving situations?
