Horn only honks when steering wheel is all the way to one side

on a 84 n/a?? I replaced the grounding ring on the steering wheel.. all wiring is good ...
I need to pass inspection tommorow (got 2 inspection tickets this week
) and the only issue is the horn. It honks every time I try and the wheel is completely turned one way or the other. if its straight nothing happens

I think you can take the steering wheel off and try touching the ground wire to the contact strip on the turn signal thing. If the horn honks then there is something off with the wheel.

Hi Mike,
The problem is most likely the middle steering shaft, which also acts as a ground for the horn. It has 2 universal joints that build up grime over time which limits its grounding function.
On my 83, removing the shaft and reinstalling it after a good cleaning solved the problem. You may be able to clean the top U-joint by giving it a shot of WD-40 or similar. To clean the lower joint, you will need to raise the front end of the car to have access from below.
IIRC there is also another grounding strap for the horn from the crossmember to the steering rack.
Good luck!
NOTE: Sometimes there is so much play in the steering shaft joints that it won't ground the horn even after a good cleaning. In that case, replacement with a used unit with better U-joints is the only alternative.
