Default Sloppy shifter

OK I have a question about shifters. Mine is a bit sloppy in that there is a lot of play in it. It shifts great and the transmission doesn't seem to exhibit any real challenges. It's slightly notchy into second but other than that its pretty much butter.

However, the shifter has a lot of play in it. I was thinking that it may have some bushing that are worn out. I've seen bushing kits for the 915 transmission in the 911 but not seen any such thing or even mention of it anywhere for the 944. Am I missing something here?

Not to hijack...

But my shifter has a lot of play as well, and I can go left and right in gear like you do in neutral (how people check to make sure their out of gear)
So... is this a major problem? nothing seems to be wrong.

check the shifter shaft. some play normal, but if it's worn, it will be alot worse.

Well there are bushings, not sure about kits, but there is a ball cup bushing and 4 other shifter bushings, not sure what they are called =S

Your shift lever should look like this,

{thank you 944online}

but the central pin is worn out. Do this,

Or just shove a lot of resin (or JB weld) in there. Some people cut the old pin off and put in a bolt. Some people, like me, opened the shift rod hole and put a brass tube over the old pin to make it cylindrical again.

Mine does the same thing. Lots and lots of play. I checked it out and I dont know the name of the part of the shifter or whatever, but there is a small peice that should be perfectly cylindrical ( === ) but both ends of it are totaly worn down so it looks more like a badly rolled cigar or something ( -=- ). My dad sais thats why it has all the play. He said just replace the shifter and it will go down alot, but that they all have some. I'll try get a pic up soon since ive been meaning to take care of that anyways

Most likely you'll just need to replace a worn shift lever. They are around $50 and easy to install.

Here is a great fix if you want to do it how it should have been designed in the first place IMHO: http://www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/tech-july-03.htm

There are two parts that can wear. One is the yellowish shift lever as pictured. The other is the 6ft long back rod that runs to the tranny. Both can wear in the same area. The lever is much easier to fix, but you should check both. Slopping shifting is not a good thing I know one driver who missed a 5th gear shift on track (got 3rd at 100+mph) twice due to a worn shift rod. He replaced the lever, but the rod was still bad.
