One of the other notable areas that the road tests have revealed dissent is the lack of an independent rear suspension. While most car enthusiasts agree that a serious high performance car in the 21st century has no place for a live axle, Ford continues to build them. In an interview with Robert Lane of StangsUnleashed.com, Team Mustang brand manager Jim Owens defended their use of the live axle. He quoted the success of the Mustang FR-500 C winning at Daytona against competitors who all had IRS. What that assertion fails to recognize is that where a live axle really faults a driver is on the street where bumps, expansion strips and potholes throw you around. A smooth racetrack is a lot more forgiving.
In the road tests, the existence of a live axle in a $40,000 high performance halo car did not go unnoticed. “That solid axle makes itself known while turning, however. The rear end jumps out when it encounters any sort of road imperfection with the steering wheel cocked, requiring extra-quick hands to keep it in line. “ Autoweek noted, “Ford argues that putting an IRS in the GT500 would add too much weight and cost to the car and still not perform better than the current configuration. We can’t say we entirely buy into Ford’s spin; seems like an awfully low-tech approach for its premier pony car.”

I guess you were agreeing with me then?
I drive a live rear axle car and the P car, I'm fully aware of the differences on the street, but on smooth pavement, the live axles is just fine....and on choppy surfaces it just requires more finese. Getting the power down on rough surfaces can get hairy though.

Also, weren't the cobra r's only painted in red?
That one was probably just a gt with a ricer wing or something, especially because any cobra would easily be able to take a 951 from a stop, which that one obviously did not do.

Ahh
It would be such a breath of fresh air to see an SC 928 doing the same thing.
Great vids, thanks for sharing.

Have you seen my signature? I have a 07 GT my wife drives that tank, I also own a 67 with a 351, but I tell you my 951 is in another world when it comes to handling.
I have bilsteins coilovers with 550 hypercoil springs front & 450 rear, also M030 sway bars. My car was weighted at 2770lbs on a truck scale so it might not be accurate but close enough.

"Handling" is an entirely subjective term. I would never dispute that a 944 handles better than a Mustang. The point was you were making ridiculous claims/comments regarding that video. The blue Mustang is not a CobraR.
You seem to agree that on a racetrack a liver rear axle is at little disadvantage, so...just what are you on about? What do your cars mods have to do with any of this? Lay of the sauce.

this is funny. I have a 88 saleen that is a blast to drive, little add ons like a paxton and roll bar to finish the stock 5 point harness. I havent had a chance to open my 944 up yet on a road and dont expect the power my 5.0 has but it should be better in the turns. getting the mustang sideways is half the fun, but I can also stick in a turn real tight. as soon as I get my p-car street legal Ill chime in with more info.
