Default Air Flow Sensor Issues

Alright guys here's a good one: My 1985.5 944 runs rich as hell. I put new plugs in it to make it run and after running it twice (it stalls after a minute or so) the new plugs are carbon encrusted. The Air Flow Sensor box cover (next to the air box) has already been pried open by the previous owner, so I have no idea if it has been tinkered with (probably). I experimented with moving the cog which moves the needle thingy. As I move the needle to the right side, it runs sooo much better, but idles at about 2k rpm and won't go down. It eventually stalls. When the needle is to the left, it runs rough for a while, then runs perfect for about 0.2 seconds then stalls. I also found that if the needle is to the right to start with, more throttle results in the needle moving itself temporarily to the left. I conclude that left=rich, right=lean. Am I wrong?

I need help to make it keep running beyond a minute or so. The mixture is seriously screwed up. Thanks in advance.

Easiest thing would be to purchase a good used LATE AFM and swap it in and see what happens.

Yeah I'm really considering replacing it. Thanks.

Can you run a late AFM with an early DME? Or how about vice versa.

Or, you could even find someone in your area to swap for a few minutes to see if that's really it before you buy one.......

His car IS late.

You cannot switch them, early is 0-12v and late is 0-5v signal.

Yeah tomorrow I'm gonna go down to the local German car garage and see what they say about it, maybe they can lend me one to try.
