Default 944S2 Cabriolet roof broke 941 561 202 10

Hi all, I have a snapped "main folding top bow" on my convertable roof (see picture below). I think it is item number 941 561 202 10. It seems to be about US$450 new. Is this my only option? Can it be welded?

Thanks

I would check for a used one. Not sure where you are from but there is a used Porsche parts place north of Toronto: http://www.nineapart.com/index.html

They are parting an '89 cabriolet...

i have several parts tops...pm me, you are in a pile of $$ there, because the original part is no longer available. the replacement will be a superceded part and will require a new center bow AND both of those at a net result of nearly $2500. I have that part used and most CABBY specifiuc stuff...window regs, qtr tops etc.

and welding? yes, you can weld it, but it will just snap again. your transmissions are out of sync, that is why it broke in the first place. if properl;y sync'd, they don't break. once they break, they just keep snapping

I took a 5 inch long 2 inch wide piece of carbon steel, drilled 2 holes in it, unscrewed the two retainers that hold the weatherstripping in place (they are on the back of the pillar that broke, they are undone by allen wrenches) put this piece in it that i drilled the two holes for these allen screws, rescrewed the allen screw in through the plate i just made and tidied it all back up. I then undid both of my roof motors and made it a manual top car. Best thing ever did!

thanks gents. I am in Sydney. I also looked at those allen bolts and was thinking the same thing. Actually I think i might have broken it myself because I had to manually put the roof down (it was half way up) and I think i got out of sync (grrr).

Nick, I will PM you on a few things.

Picklejuice (haha) why do you think making it manual is good?

Cheers

I've had my S2 top in manual mode since I bought it in 1999. It's loads quicker to open and close than my electric 951 top...

It also allows you to make sure there are no improper creases in the plastic window and top, and you need to get anyways to put the boot on and off..

yeah i agree.

I wonder if i wired it up to 24v if it would go twice as fast... hmmm maybe I could connect the windows as well. At least I could remove that dumb weight and replace it with another battery...

Just joking.

Thanks for the idea re the brace. I believe it is cast aluminium and can be welded as well.

Really need to fix it soon with this rain in Sydney.

If you drive fast enough, the slipstream of air around you should deflect all rain drops. Sure, it's only a stop-gap measure, but it can buy you some time.

almost a year and still like new. BTW short the relay output in the fuse area and it allows you to use the roof with/without the key and with the engin going... Thinking of putting a little press momentary switch connected to the microswitches in the window frame to prevent operation while driving.

DON'T do this. If you or someone else ever accidentally hits the switch with the top locked, you're screwed big time.
