Default 1988 944 N/A transmission w/ LSD- SOLD

I was going to hold onto this trans and use it in my '83 but decided to just sell it and if I want LSD i'll just buy a new one later on and put it in. Plus im in need of cash at the moment since ive decided to skip the 8v engine altogether and go with a 968 vario cam 16v engine instead

The trans is from my 1988 944 N/A parts car. It has LSD, and since it was in an '88 i'm assuming it has the short 5th gear as well. At the moment I cant recall the mileage on the car but i'll update this first post with the mileage tomorrow when I get a chance to go look.

My asking price is $800, but I am flexible on the price so just ask.
I would prefer local pickup but if someone wants it shipped I can put it on a palet, but you'll have to arrange and pay for shipping.

I wish this thing could work in my 968. Or at least I wish the diff unit could be swapped into my 968 tranny. Argh.

Are the 924S/944/968 trannies not all plug-and-play?

People put '68 trannies in '44s, why can't it be the other way around?

I know for a fact 85.5+ transmissions are all interchangable as I've played with 3 different combo's on torque tubes I have laying around. Hell there is an '85.5 NA torque tube bolted up to a standard block with a 968 transaxle in my garage right now.

So yes, this would probably fit in a 968, but to get rid of the 6 speed would be a complete waste.

That's what I thought...all the '44 trannies have the same case, so there shouldn't be any sort of fitment problem with bolts to the TT...but I agree, keep your lovely 6-speed and see if there's an aftermarket LSD lying around somewhere.

You can use a Quaife (for 968 applications) or factory LSD, or IIRC GT3 units in the 968 box. As it's a traditional G series box. You'll need to check on that last one though

Fyi, the 968 casing is significantly different, just because they finally went to a unit that didnt have a bell housing doubled for FWD Audi's (which is why the 944's have a place for a starter in the rear

Its plug but NOT play since the speedo sensors are in different locations between the 968 and the late 944. The early 944s have the speedo cable in the left front hub so a late 944 trans will fit provided you bolt the early trans mounts on the late tranny.

Whew! I have a late going in an early tomorrow (with the help of Genikz) and I never asked anyone if it will fit. Now I know. Thanks Legoland951. Separately, if I decided to put an electronic speedo in, would it then play with the right sender/speedo? TIA

Michael, the late transmission will fit into an early and everything will work since it does NOT need the electrical sensor of the late trans. It uses the cable to the left front hub so no modification is necessary. Just unbolt the trans mount off your early tranny and put it in the late tranny.

Thanks Frank. As always, you're the man. Sorry for all the threadjacks, but at least they bump that very cool tranny you have for sale at an excellent price.
