Default Trading an 84' 944 for a spec 944....?

Do you guys think its possible to me to trade my 84' in perfect condition, for a 944 spec car? If so, where should i start with that.. I'd really rather not have to go tearing this car down, and make it a spec car, and keep it on the road but if i have to it still probably wont be done lol..if anything, i would probably have to add but i'm just throwing that out as an idea. Heres a link to some pictures and specs on the car to get a better estimate.. http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...eadExists=true i'm not trying to nor intend to sell my car off this, and if im breaking the rules feel free to close the thread..

Thanks for the help!!

A prepped 944 spec car runs around $10k+ so I think even if you have a perfect 944 turbo it will still be tough. If you have a turbo S in good condition, then you may get someone to bite. Your best bet is to find a running 944 with a straight body and trashed interior for about $1500 and start from there. If you do all the work yourself, it will probably still cost you about $6k.

Go to www.nasaforums.com and ask there. There is a forum called 944-challenge which deals with 944 spec cars. But yea, you'd have a hard time doing a swap without putting in a little more cash.

Good luck,

I think it would be hard to find someone to trade you... You can find some 944-spec cars that you can buy with $6000, but the problem is that you'd have to find someone who wants to trade one for a nice street 944 like yours. I'd recommend selling your 944, then taking that money and using it to buy a cheap 944 or 924S with trashed interior but good motor (should be $2000 or less), cage it ($900-1400), add the other required safety gear ($300-400), a set of Koni Yellows ($600), front adjustable coilovers ($300) + rear torsion bars ($300), and another set of wheels with 225/50-15 Toyo RA-1's ($200 for rims + $600 for Toyos). That should be pretty do-able with a $6000 budget, and you could have several hundred dollars left over if you shop around and find good deals. You may be able to get bigger sway bars into that budget too, which runs around $250 - $700 depending on what you get (I personally can't justify paying more than $300 for a pair of sway bars). The car wont be built to the limit of the rules, but it will be a heck of a lot more prepared than most of us 944-spec racers started with. As time/budget allows, you can work on getting race-compound brake pads, LSD, short 5th gear, and little things like intake/exhaust mods, suspension bushings, A/C delete bracket, etc. I'd say that it's possible to build a 944-spec car to the limit of the rules within a budget of $8000 (maybe less if you shop around and/or buy used parts), but you really shouldn't worry about making that happen right away. Most of the guys in my region just threw safety gear and Toyo RA-1's onto an otherwise stock 944 or 924S and went racing, and we had a lot of fun doing it. Now we're just gradually building our cars, without trying too hard to do everything at once.

Thanks for the advice!! i'd learn a lot more if i set it up myself as well. Does any one use the spec cars for more than just the races to... autocross? or doing solo's with the SCCA?

It might be hard to find a trade straight across, but I've seen some spec cars minus cage for around 5-7G... just sell your car and buy one already built!

A Spec-944 for $6000 will probably be incomplete, or have just the basics. Unless you find a very motivated seller. Even with my $1100 base car and doing all the work myself, my spec project will cost me between $8k - 9k.

I agree on straight up trades. Suprisingly the 944 spec car is now one for highest value 2.5L NA types out there. The priced estimates some of the other 944 spec guys have posted are about right.

Doing it yourself takes time and patience, but saves you alot of money and allows you to fix the car yourself at he track shoud anything happen. These cars do not require any special tricks in building them so a car built at home in the back yard can be just as fast as one built by a "shop".

When I first started with my car back in October 2000 I would autocross it, DE the car and do all of my track stuff with it. Great car. As I started racing it began to do less and less non-racing stuff with the car. Reason was I had enough track time with one weekend per month racing during our racing seasons. I could have taken the car out to other events, but chose not to. If you have the time and money to support all these events a 944 spec cars is great to run just about any place. It may not class out very well due to the stripped interior, but with racing roll cage it will at least be legal to run.
