How did yours let go?
On 2 of mine, the O-rings under the manifold plate on the top failed and it poured oil/refrigerant all over my compressor. Looked like the O-rings where the lines attached and after changing those several times I continued to look. If that is the case, it is literally a $10 fix.

If you want to do A/C on a budget then fill it with HC-12 or R12a (a hydrocarbon substitute). Redtek does not require the system to be under a vacuum to fill, since it does not form acids when there is moisture in it, and it is so efficient that a tiny bit of air doesn't matter.

Well a quick status:

I never heard back from the site that had the rebuild kits...I'll ping them again just to see if we can get an answer on the rebuild kits. It would be nice to have source for all of us!

I got underneath last week to really check out the leak and low and behold it wasn't the compressor. It was the high pressure hose at the compressor end, and the leak followed the hose down to the pan making it look like it was coming off the compressor. Woo-hoo. So I ordered a new R134 compatible hose and dryer from Griffiths, bought a conversion kit from the local Pepboys and the cheap vacuum box and gages from Harbor. Installed the dryer, sucked the system dry for a couple hours and did the conversion. The system sucked up the R134 like a champ! It's been in the 80's here for the past couple days and the system is working great!!

For a 134a conversion what replacement hoses are recommended? I may be doing this soon.

You really don't need to change the hoses. In my case my high pressure hose was toast, so when I replaced it I got a "barrier" version. Apparently the molecules of R134 are smaller than the old R12...and will slowly leak through the old style hoses. I would imagine the ones they'd leak from most would be the high pressure ones since they'd get more of a push!! But if your hoses are holding I wouldn't bother...R134 is pretty cheap these days and if you lose a bit it's replaceable and you're not burning holes in the ozone layer!

Thanks. Two more questions - I was told that 134a is only available as refridgerant + oil, so if it leaks and you refill now you have too much oil. Is that true?

Also, how much 134a oil did you put in?

I used an Interdynamics kit and put 2 cans of their Refrigerant/Oil in. Each can had 12 oz. of Refrigerant & 3 oz. of Ester Lubricant. It stopped right in the "green" zone on the cheap little gage that came with the kit...and it started working just fine!

Not sure about your other question...perhaps one of our "AC Gods" on the list would know? I was assuming you would lose oil as well as refrigerant but maybe not always. In my case I lost both when the hose went.
