Default Back to stock from the cone filter

I did the search on some old forums but I still don't have a good feeling about this. I am ditching the cone and putting the stock airbox back on my 87 na. Yeah, I am afraid of the possible consequences of substandard air filtration. The question is whether or not to block the hole for the hose that runs to the timing belt cover. Are we in consensus that there is no harm in blocking this off??? How have some of you blocked it off without making it look like junk? Any pics would be great.

Mine is just open. I can't see how anything could get into that hole. It's at the top of the motor so maybe the insulation foam could fall in, but that wouldn't do anything to the timing belt. But if you want local automotive shops sell rubber caps that will probably look decent covering it. I think they're called vacuum caps, but i'm not sure.

That's what I put on my airbox... from the local hardware store. It's basically a rubber stopper with metal end caps and a bolt through it... Tighten the bolt, you squeeze out the rubber and it seals. Mine is zinc coated and looks OEM really. I'm a member of the "NO BELT COVERS BIATCH" club, so I don't know about blocking that hole...

Look in the drawer section with the random rubber plugs and shims and such...

I have a cone on the AFM (temporarily) until I get a new mushroom filter or find all of the pieces to my stock box. The Acura set-up I had in there proved to be not so durable in the rain. It got really thrashed. For one day, a month ago, it rained really hard here in LA. The car did bog. I will not dismiss any suggestions of hydro-locking (or whatever it called), the next time they are made at set-ups similar to mine. Before then, the filter did see plenty of water and it was unusable in the end. The good news is that I live in a very predictably dry place. While I decide what I am going to do (stock or find a more durable flat filter for the fender), the weather is still cool and my car runs even cooler. So, I am not worried about heat (yet). Michael

PS - Did I just fall through the FO FO looking glass?

Schwank, how did you remove the plastic cover covering your fan assembly in the rear of your engine bay? do you need to remove the windshield first?

I know eric put a new windshield in, so that may have something to do with how he got rid of the shroud.

Actually it's very easy. It's just held on by an adhesive strip on the rear (windshield side), so you carefully pull it off.

Yeah, I removed it when I first got the car to facilitate cleaning. It's hard to get off in one piece since the plastic tends to be brittle after 20 years. As Jake said it's only adhesive tape on the flat metal piece below the window. You'll have to remove the wipers though.

The 968 belt cover doesn't even have a hole. There is no tube connecting the airbox to the belt housing. Therefore I take it that tube was never really necessary.

I would just leave the hole open. If you want to cover it, try finding the factory plug that 944CS mentioned.

No, it is foam tape, and tends to rip down the middle of the foam leaving useless residue on both pieces. Clean it off and use some new 3M stuff.

The tube from the air box to the belt cover was deleted. Probably a factory service bulletin on that somewhere.
