I'm sure it has something to do with messing up their hair

I know a guy in KC who is interested in building an early NA track car. PM me the details, I'd be semi serious about picking this up for my track car and selling my yellow '83 track car to a friend, assuming his wife doesn't hate yellow cars as much as mine does.

Regards,

The car is in Northern Ca. It has brown interior which it is not in the best condition.

Why wouldn't you guys want to get a SR car & bolt in a CF panel after stripping out all the SR crap for a track car...? I picked one up once that weighed less than 1lb... It would definately be lighter than a non-SR car, especially at the top of the car, & thus, stiffer chassis- especially since most race cars get roll cages anyway... The SR takes up >80% of the roof, so sort of like BMW's CF roof for the M6. I realize the novelty of non-SR cars, since they're so rare, but just curious about the real benefit as opposed to what COULD be done w/the more common SR cars....?

It's clearly in Pakistan. No sunroof = no RPGs to the head.

Question Sunroof deletes?

In reference to the idea of closing off the existing sunroof with a CF panel, can you advise what kind of panel that is and who supplies them? I'd love to get rid of my sunroof on my '87 944 track car but have been told by a reputable body shop (specializing in Porsche work) that no one makes a fiberglass insert for the 944 because the roof isn't strong enough to take out the sunroof panel. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me as Porsche made the cars so that the sunroof was completely removable anyway.

Question

Yeah, that's an odd thing for a body shop to say. The chassis actually becomes stiffer when you remove the SR panel. When a car's weight is reduced, the chassis flexes less- ESPECIALLY when it's 20lbs at the highest Cg. Also, how could the panel itself actually increase the strength of the roof? I mean, I've seen pics of these cars cornering hard where one can actually see corners of the panel popping up slightly. That's like just sitting a cage inside the car & claiming it's stiffer- well, not unless you bolt it down- otherwise, you've just added a bunch of metal, which actually hurts the chassis. For the panel to help at all, it would have to be bolted into place & even then, it's weight would probably negate any possible benefits. That's why I say a SR car would be better than a non-SR car. That's also probably why BMW did the CF roof for the M6- you really don't need for the entire roof to be filled in for structural integrity- merely the outer edges.

I know some people who only race w/their panels out- not so much to save 20lbs, but to get 20lbs off the highest Cg- I don't know about anyone else, but I was sincere when I said that I can feel a difference w/the panel out. And I don't mean removed from the car entirely, but merely putting the 20lb lid in the back.

I can't believe they'd say the roof isn't strong enough. I mean, what about Saratogas? They've had several versions of very thin glass & also plastic type SR lids for our cars. Not only that, but several pics have been posted of these cars upside down w/cabins intact & that had nothing to do w/the SR. In one set of pics I saw like this, the SR panel was out & the driver had been driving that way beforehand- the pillars were still intact. Many cars would collapse from their own weight, SR or no SR....

Anyway, as for where to get a CF panel- I THINK that GT Racing had some. The one I picked up, years ago, was made by Garrity Repta, who is no longer in the Porsche world. I'm hoping to get a local guy to do some molds, but many people on here have tried this to no avail, as of yet. but I keep hoping...

With the sunroof out while racing wouldn't you get air resistance?

Now that's a good point... It wouldn't matter much though, unless you were going fairly fast, like real tracks... The guys I've known who've raced w/out them have been auto-Xing- I didn't think about that. I do know a local guy who just bought a 951 who is having a CF SR made- he's supposed to be picking the car up this week w/all kinds of cool stuff installed- I want to see the SR more than anything- will let you know what happens. I believe he's wanting to have it useable- the racing idea, considering wind resistance, then, probably the best bet would be bolting in CF- that's my opinion. Again, though, I can understand the novelty of wanting one of these that never had a SR from the factory, since it's fairly rare...
