I'd like to add a temporary tach to my wife's Civic that I could easily remove. I see a ton of racing computers advertised in Grassroots Motorsports that claim to acquire all kinds of data just by plugging it into the cigarette lighter. Has anyone tried one of these?
Thanks

Those tachs measure changes in engine speed via alternator belting. They may not be so accurate on an older car with unseen/noticed electrical problems. Long story short, if it's temporary then it is better than nothing, but can't you live without a tach?
Make sure to get one with a mad tyte shift light. It adds like 20 hp.

I just put a tach on my friend's 96 civic. It wasn't just a plug in one. It took about an hour to put in. Largest part was just getting the wires through the firewall. It only takes connecting three wires (ground, battery, and instrument light) and splicing one (tach reading). Easy to do, but there is probaly a reason the car didn't have one in the first place, as it doesn't really need one.
