While I'm prepping the car for spring, and doing various things, I was wondering about the halfshafts. What are the tolerances for "play" in them say back and forth wheel to trans? Front to back of car?
Just curious if there are any before I decide whether to replace or simply repack the CV joints on them.
Thanks.

They making any oddball noises, clicking, popping-wise? If not, and there are no leaks on the tranny - move on - nothing to see here!

Any axial play is normal, part of the design. If they are not noisy I wouldn't do more than turn them end for end so the forward torque is applied in the other direction. Of course if you have a half day to dissasemble everything and put new boots and fresh grease on, go for it. You may put off new ones for a long time. I found the circlips on the shaft ends to be the biggest challenge.
