Default Solution to leaking battery trays?

I was in home depot picking up some tools and they had like thousand displays of expanding foam cans. Would these work to plug holes under the battery tray that cause leaking onto passenger floor board?

Highly doubtful as it is the battery acid that eats through the sheet metal. Expanding foam will be no match acid. There is a product called POR15 that some have used with good results. Best thing to do is cut out the rusted parts and fabricate a new battery tray.

No only way to fix it is to scrape all the rubber off the battery tray (takes a long time and a lot of scraping/ sanding/ using chemicals too soften the rubber, like paint remover)

once you get to bare metal you'll see the rust and you'll have to poke around with a screwdriver to see where the rust is bad and you can poke a hole through it. Thjey you should probably cut off as much of the bad rust as possilbe.

then I'd recommend using hte por15 kit. metal convertor preps the metal and converts teh rust to another form (black) then you paint over it with por15 paint which won't chip and doesn not let moisture through unlike pain.

I did this on my 944 this summer even though I don't know if it leaked I just thought it was a good ide to do it to prevent leaks in the future.

on my old 924 the hole was bigger and I had water leaking in.

I filled the hole with expoxy made for sealing gas tanks etc and them painted over all of it with with the por15.

the hardest part is getting the rubber coating off. If you use paint remover it's much easier then you just scrape it off and wash the area.

I doubt the rust will be so bad that you have to cut it off, even my old 924 I only poked a penny size hole in it and sanded all the rust off with an electric sander/ by hand/ using metal convetor.

this should stop it from coming back for a long time robably longer than the car lasts.

So would it not be a good idea to simply plug up the entire area under the battery completely?

It will only be a temporary fix. If you are going to do that, remove the battery and prep the area on top and on bottom and use some good epoxy and fiberglass cloth to cover the rust hole on both sides.

You should really just weld it though.

I need to get a after picture but I neutarlized the rust and then used JB weld, clear coat, and then truck bed liner.

There is no cure for cancer (rust). However, if found and treated early, the patient can live a long and productive life.
