My recently aquired 944 needs a head gasket. I found a gasket kit at Pelican Parts. I also plan to replace the timing belt. What else should i do while I have the head off of it?
Doing the work is not a problem, I've been wrenching since childhood. Do I need any special tools for the job?
Thanks in advance for your answers and help.Mark

I would suggest starting with Clark's if you haven't checked it out yet. Here is a link to their Head Gasket Procedure. I am in the middle of the same process. Changing on one an N/A, which I assume your car is as well.
Since you have to remove the cam tower and timing belt to pull the head, you will need the special tools to reset the belt tension properly. Myself and many others are using Bruce Arnn's tools, here is Link to Bruce's site You may find someone local to you that will let you borrow theirs. Other than that, you may want to think about re-sealing your injectors. May want to have your head checked for flatness too. The previous owner of my car overheated it and the head was slightly twisted. Unless you know the history of the timing and balance belts, be sure to replace those while you're at it. Hope that helps.
