Default How To: Put 6.5" Speakers in the rear

So many know that there aren't much choices for 4x6 speakers to put in our 944's. I got some Infinity 4x6 plates and made some spacers for them so they didn't hit the window track. While I was working on the car, I decide to pull off the rear panel and fix the leaky window I had. While I was there, I looked at the rear speakers and noticed they had a bracket holding them in it. With the bracket out, they fit 6.5" speakers perfectly. I happened to have a pair of Infinity 6.5's laying around so tapped another hole to mount the speaker. With that done, I put the panel back on and it fit perfectly. You don't have to cut up the panel or anything. I thought maybe the panel being in front of the speaker might have some effects on it, but they still sound great and nobody knows they are there So they are perfect for someone that wants to retain a stock look.

sorry for the camera phone pics:

Sweet. Do all years have the same setup in the rear like that? Hopefully I can put some nice 6.5s in the back of my '84.

The 86's still had the 4x6. I had to cut and make plates for mine but they sound so much better especially with some Nuprene sound insulation glued down first.

Yeah, I'm gonna go and make some plates to seal them off and get better bass response.

Where'd you get the spacers for your 4x6 Infinity Plates? I have had those speakers since I got the car, but havent seen a place to get them.

I traced the speakers and cut them out of 3/8" plywood. Then just painted them black.

Yes, as Steve said, they do not ALL have the large opening- I USED to have pics I could send to show you other cars, but my f**cking comp went down & I lost my entire HD... Anyway, you can cut the metal w/out too much effort & then make an adapter out of wood- preferably not heavy-a$$ MDF, but something lighter. I have a Turbo S, so it had the 6.5's from factory- I made adpaters to fit round speakers in place, as factory Turbo S were square- I later decided to go larger as I know 6x9's will fit, but would require metal cutting & more exact tolerances. Well, I ended up getting Kappa 5x7/6x8's components back there w/out cutting ANY metal- fit perfectly, almost, w/a wooden adapter plate- again,I HAD pics... I'll try to snap more as I'm not finished yet anyway... They had to go in at the slightest of angles to keep from cutting anything...

The big round cut (rear) in the body is not designed for regular car audio speakers. Porsche used hi-fi woofers there from home hi-fi speakers line (different dimensions, mounting) produced by Heco, Germany. I have recently bought replacements for original woofers. They fit perfectly - bolt in no additional plates req. See photo - notice mounting "ears".
Soon, I will follow up with pictures from installation (no time - very busy now ).

Yes, those look like early stock 6.5's- you can get them through Porsche, but they're sort of pricey for what they're worth. They fit perfectly though, & they are decent SQ. However. it's very easy to make mounting adapters for regular round 6.5's- good enough to seal up all edges very well, which is very important, as lots of noise comes through those openings otherwise. I've seen people make adapters for 6.5's out of metal, fiberglass, wood, & types of plastic... I've done a few sets w/wood- cheaper & easier for me...

That's pretty cool- never seen the stats on them before- that's also just the woofers, I'm sure- the tweeters would allow much higher range...? Anyway, $21/pr is dirt cheap... They're normally ~$130/pr...

The rear tweeters in OEM 10sp soundsystem were mounted on additional rear griles. I plan to build a crossover to make 6,5s work as subwoofers. Fq cut - 80 Hz. Should work fine wit 4x6 JBL's in door and additional tweetes in doors (plan to buy OEM 10sp soundsystem griles, mounted above elect. windows switches).
