Thanks all!
I am buying the handles off of Josh's 86 Turbo parts car....my driver's handle failed resulting in the door jamming closed...it looks just like royal's pic and infact the spring clip is what came off and was the offending piece!

I have re-keyed and traded out several cylinders on the old style handles with other old-style parts. Do you mean that the parts are different between the older style and newer style handles or are you saying that the cylinders dont come out of the old style handles?

I believe the lock cylinders are longer in the 85.5+ handles. This was to for the electric locks and central Locking option. If you plan on swapping late cylinders into early handles it will work with a spacer, using early cylinders in late handles won't work if you want to retain the solenoid function. You are much better off converting the entire handle assembly if you can. Remember anything can be done but what it's worth in time and aggravation.

O.K. so here's what I found out. The old lock cylinder (from an 83) is longer than the newer lock cylinder which creates a problem in that sticks out beyond the (new) handle. See photos 1 and 2.
What to do? Once you get the lock cylinders out (with a key in to prevent launching the tumblers), hold the tumblers on each side of the cylinder with your fingers and remove the key. Slowly let go and the tumblers will stay put in the cylinder as shown in the first photo. Next, carefully remove each tumbler and lay aside in the order and side of the cylinder where they came out (photo 3). Be careful that the tiny springs stay in the cylinder. Now take the tumblers from the old lock and install them in the new lock cylinder. Carefully compress them with your fingers and install the 'old' key. If you kept everything in order, the key should push the tumblers so they line up flush with the cylinder surface on each side - which allows the cylinder to rotate when installed in the handle. Voila! lock surgery completed. Does anyone have a source for new lock cylinder seal rings (photo 4)? The originals disintegrate upon cylinder removal.
