Default why does my transmission sound like straight gut gears while under load?

my trans is making a noise which sounds like straight cut gears... what could the problem be?

It only happens when im under load, but also when i rev my motor in neutral with the clutch out when the trans is warm (after a run down the highway) i get a definte rattle sound upon pushing the gas in and also around 2800 rpm.

the gear noise is what concerns me the most though, its quite anoying. definatly way more noticable when the trans is nice an warm.

thoughts? the car is a 1990 s2 with 52,000 origional Kilometers

not really sure.. but could it be the bearings in the torque tube going out? Some guy who was going to buy a spare torque tube from me a while ago described the same situation.. and said thats why he wanted the TT.. but then i never heard back from him.

Not much moves in the transmission while you're sitting still -- or, more specifically, not much that should make noise... The gears are still spinning, but they're all free-wheeling, and should be pretty quiet, unless there is NO fluid in there...

If you jack the car up, remove the inspection cover for the drive shaft-to-transaxle coupling, take out the two fastening bolts, and slide the coupler back towards the tranny, you could then start up the car, rev it and see if you still have the noise. If you do, then it's coming from either your torque tube or your throwout bearing.

Good luck!

is it a whine? or is it a high pitched annoying SQEEKEY shaky rattling noise?

mine does this, the only way to make it stop is to FULLY depress the clutch. and it only does it after the car has been driven around and tranny warmed up. i can leave it running in the garage for hours from initial cold start up it wont make a peep. once i get down the road and the fluids are warmed up in the back it gets really annoying. Mostly while at traffic lights waiting with the clutch pedal up in N.

I suspected the TT but a lot of guys talked me out of it. TT rebuild is still on my list but until i know for sure what this is im not going to tare into it.

one hypothesis from the guys here was it was "the 5th gear" rattling.

im frustrated because its trashy sounding, and when i got under the car with the stethoscope the damm thing sounded the same from the TT all, to all the points i touched right back to the rear of the tranny housing. really annoying.

Change your oil ASAP. (I like Redline) and check for any debris in your oil. If there is none, you're fine
