In PET, there is a protection plate that appears to bolt to the bottom of the bell housing - looks like it should cover/hide any view of the flywheel/starter ring gear.

Am I looking at this correctly?

No car that I have ever looked at, has had this on it, that I recall (?).

Anyone have this part on their car, and a pic of it. Apparently, its not year or model specific.

All the n/a cars that I have seen have this plate, including the S2. The 968 has a different variation of one. I don't recall if the turbos have it.

I can take a couple of pics when I get home tonight.

 

It's just a piece of black stamped steel that covers up the ring gear/flywheel. It's not necessary to any sort of operation, but the bolts holding it on suggest otherwise (17MM hex).

Just keeps the dirt off of the clutch.

 

I can confirm that the black piece is not on my NA but it may have been there at some point of its life.

 

Mine split, so I pulled it off (924S).

 

My mom's 944 and my old 944 both had it.
