Default speed and ref sensor

Tearing the car down for the clutch. After all of the talk about the difficulties with the speed and ref sensors causing the housing to catch on removal, I am somewhat cautious. There was talk about aluminum sleeves in the sensor holes (I think). Here is what I've removed and unless they were talking about the aluminum canisters of the sensors, I cannot see anything else down those holes. Is there more?

nope, that's everything.

make sure you didn't move the bracket them mounted in. The bracket is adjustable to allow the set screws in the flywheel to just clear the sensor. Too far out, the sensor might as well not be there, too far in, whammo. There is a procedure on Clark's page to deal with properly setting the clearance.

If the aluminum portion is missing, you will know it!

Are you doing the bellhousing modification?

You're straight. That Aluminum sleeve thing was a supercession. The original one was superceeded to have an aluminum sleeve. Probally because those sensors kept getting stuck in there and crap

Definitely sounds like a popular mod. I'll see how it goes. I was thinking of doing the slot mod on the AOS as long as I have just about everything else out of the way. My car seems to suck up sooo much oil. I never had this problem on the first 951. Thanks for all your help on these sensors.

Wow....wait a minute, there is an alloy sleeve in one of the bores in that damn bracket. I don't see it there. I have a picture of the bracket in my camera, and I'll post it tonight to show you what happened to me. That alloy sleeve didn't come out with the Reference Sensor...and it hung on the housing and cracked the bracket before I knew what was happening!

Your adventures with the sensor is what got me worried in the first place. I've found the diagram in the pet that you are referring to, but I cannot see anything like that in my 86. (Nice drawing by the way) If I have it then it must be made or 'transparent aluminum'.

Dan,

If you look straight down at the bracket the sleeve is seated in the bore on a lip that sits in a recess on the bracket itself. If you see an extra circle around that bore then you have that darn sleeve. It is REALLY hard to see when you're draped across the engine.

If you can't see it then my advice is to go forward with the disassembly and if the clutch housing comes off easily you're home free. If it binds at all don't take any chances...just take the bracket off. Tonight I re-install the sensors and the new bracket, and the exhaust...then we'll see if I have any parts left over!!

...and yes I did indeed 'slot' my clutch housing like the previous post!! Lesson learned the hard way.
