Default Some questions on 3.0 NA project.

I have a friend who drives S2. He wants me to "add some kick" to his car for summer and since he ruled out turbocharging (summer is coming too soon ), I was thinking about Web Cam cams, ITB's w/ trumpets and standalone engine management. Intake will be of course based on calculations not "hints" and most likely tuned to 4th resonance wave.

I'd like to get some input regarding cams: are there better ones that are readily available? Pro's, con's?

Also, maybe some more things that S2 engine could use to get more power?

Go with 944S valvesprings or aftermarket ones. The stock valve springs are not strong enough to last under the higher lift of any cam mod with increased RPM.

Thanks for the ideas. Should have mention that valves springs are already on the list and we managed to find aftermarket stronger ones for really good price. Yes, you guessed it: ones from VW fit.

Jesse, what is involved adapting VarioCam to S2 head? I could make it truly variable not simple on/off by using PWM. At least that crossed my mind and we'ra planning this on my friends 951 3.0 16v Turbo (968 engine).

Well if you're going aftermarket see if you can get some 12:1 pistons to go with that manifold and cams.

You sure this isnt for your 924?

So THAT's why you were looking for a used 968 cam tensioner.... You're trying to adapt it into your 944S? That sounds really interesting! I never even thought about doing that to a 2.5-16 motor!

Would you use 968 cams or put custom sprockets on the S cams?

No, this is my friends '90 S2 project. My 924 won't breathe normally, but with some assistance Though ITB's are quite ready for it also.

And we are not going that aftermarket, just stiffer valve springs, Milledge reground cams (S2 intake and S exaust) after consulting with Jon Milledge. Most likely RS Barn headers and crank scraper also. Wouldn't want that nice engine to ruin it's 2. rod bearing on the track. It's going to be a street car that sees some track time and is just fun to drive and has helluva throttle response (hence the ITB's).

Ow, wouldn't that cost as much as a 968 motor before all was said and done?

Sorry for the thread hijack, BTW.

There is a 928 with variocam heads, the custom cams were _very_ expensive but they were billet.

This page shows the S4 heads converted to fit a 968 variocam unit:
