that's where i got my idea, i just don't have the cash for Motec. a regrind for a custom set of cams ranges from $695-$895, and RS Barn offers sprocket replacements for 968 cams.

I think we'll go for VarioCam if someone's willing to point where to source good used 968 chain tensioner. New one costs like kidney and soul.

On an S2 it'd be way easier just to add a 968 head given the custom welding and machining to get the variocam unit in the S2 head, the cost of the parts, cam modifications, cam cover, etc. Plus the 968 head has bigger valves and the cams are profiled for the variocam.

I'd guess about 2/3rds of the 968's 30 more HP over the S2 comes from the variocam, cams and valves and the rest is from the MAF and the engine management.

I have access to a 968 head reasonable, but someone told me that the 968 head on S2 block wouldn't work the variocam, it would just be dead weight in there? What is the secret to getting the 968 head transplant to work? (if in fact it is easier that the variocam transplant)

Wow can't wait to see the answer to this one. Looking for a 968 head now.

You would have to bodge up something to switch the variocam unit. An RPM window switch and a vacuum switch might work. Hysteresis would be a problem if you happened to cruise right at the RPM the variocam was getting switched, but a vacuum switch would prevent that if set to disable the variocam at light or cruise throttle.

I mentioned already in the 1st post that we'll use standalone engine management and I would like to not just switch the VArioCam on/off but make it truly variable through rpm range by using pulsewidth modulation.
