Default '83 Motor value

I have a lead on an '83 parts car with a blown head gasket... how much would the short block and head fetch separately? How much might that motor go for as a whole?

Thanks,
Kevin

Head is probably worth $100, short block in good shape with no scored cylinders $200-$300. If you part it you'll make most of your money on the trans, fenders, doors, wheels, and other little things here and there, the engine for some reason just isn't worth much.

Thanks Azn... oh I know the motor isn't the money-piece. The car is sitting on Fuchs

I'm just trying to tally up a list of rough numbers to gauge the possible income versus the sale price I've negotiated with the guy. Aren't the '83 internals desireable? That doesn't bump up the motor price even a little past the normal early-motors??

How much do the early trannies go for? $500?

Internals are a bit better if you are picking and choosing for a build up, it should have forged rods, and I've heard pistons but I can't confirm that. If it's a really early '83 it'll have a factory cross drilled crank and of course a manual rack. Unfortunately in my experience unless you part these out individually you won't really get much more than what you would get for a later short block. Tranny's aren't worth all that much either unless it's LSD so typically you'd be looking at $200-$400 depending on the typical factors, condition, mileage, how bad someone wants it etc. I've been sitting on an '85 parts car which I bought basically for the Fuchs and it's slow moving so far, I'm hoping things will start to pick up again once track season gets closer or else it's up to evilbay.

I'll let you know if I get it, Jesse.

Azn, thanks for the tips. I had forgotten about the cross-drilled crank. I've heard the rumor about the pistons being forged, but I don't think I ever had the chance to confirm or deny that at my old shop.

...if I get it, I might be inclined to check.

i don't know about the pistons... but the rods should be forged - i'd like those!
