Current 968 handle + Mirror upgrade pricing, and a question
talked to jeff, and as of 2-5-07, $318.91 + Shipping on the mirror kit, and
"The door handle upgrade consists of 17 different part numbers, like 2 springs, 2 pins, 2 clips, left handle, right handle, etc and so on. You have to paint the handles to your car color. This upgrade only works on 1986 and later 944's where you take your old lock cylinder out of your old handles and transfer that to the new 968 handles. If you have a 1985 or older 944, or a later 1985 944, also called 85 and a half, then the lock cylinder from your old handles won't transfer over to the new 968 handles and you will have to buy the new 968 lock cylinders for about 192.00 per side. Or you get 1987 and later used door handles just to get the lock cylinder, or buy new 1987 handles with the lock cylinder from me for 132.00 per side, then you have a locksmith transfer the tumblers from old to new cylinder so you can still use your old key. Note that the early 1986 model cars sometimes fall into the early 1985 car category and the cylinders don't transfer over from these early 86 cars either. There's no vin# info that will help me determine if your car has these old style handles or not. There are probably websites out there that describe installing these handles on 944's and hopefully there are pictures or remarks from people that have run into problems and you can see the differences and how they dealt with it from their website. The total for all the parts to fit and work on the 86 and later cars runs close to 210.00 plus shipping. This does not include any lock cylinders of any kind.
Since we sell all our OEM parts (we are a Porsche dealer) at dealer cost plus 15% markup, plus shipping, on many parts there isn't enough markup to make a substantial difference when a discount is given for a group buy for example. So unless we are talking about a couple thousand dollars in parts we stick to the cost plus 15% program. We've done group deals before on these kits with mirrors and then we can play a bit if we get like 5 people that want both kits. If you guys all want just door handle kits, it's easier if I ship it all to one address, one credit card but since that's a pain for you we usually stick to cost plus and send them all out to the individuals that buy them. Right now availability on the mirror kits is a problem, and in the past even some of the door handle parts have been backordered a month from Germany. See what you think about all this and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Jeff."
glad i didnt buy the ones on ebay that just sold for $255
and my question, how hard is it to source used cylinders from an 87 (just to be safe) or later car? anyone here have some? otherwise handle upgrade might wait, and ill just go ahead with the mirrors

Sorry -- I don't know the answer to your question, though...

Cory, yes you can. I asked Sunset a few months ago about this. They said they could not find a part # for the 968CS mirrors, but said i can get the mirror kit from the 964 (i think the RS America?) and buy the 968 mirror base seperatley. The kit for the 911 was $287.44 and each mirror base was $37.10 + 2 gaskets at $2.48.
I think i read a post from Tifo that said the mirrors have a 965 part number and the weight difference between the manual and electric really is not that much.
Or you can do what i did and just not hook them up.. . Actually i plan to hook mine up..just need to do it when i pull the door panel off to put the 968 door handles on. Splicing the wire harness together is a pain in the butt with the short amount of wiring.

968 mirrors are plastic- yes, much lighter- probably save ~4lbs total. You can also save ~$30 on the handles by not buying two pieces- the piece that goes into the door & connects to the backside of the trigger (latch)- I don't know what it's called, but you'll be putting a dremel to the backside of the new 968 handle (BEFORE you paint them)- have to be careful not to take too much off though, or you'll break the handle eventually- the latch breaks the small piece that holds it on- ask me how I know... You really almost have to SEE this to know what I mean & I might be able to snap pice if anyone cares about saving the $30... I did it partially b/c the 968 handle replacement write-up, by Keith Foster, said this part was about the hardest part to change of the whole deal.
Also, what Tifo says is true- the electric motor weighs next to nothing & that's coming from a weight fanatic like me. I'm not sure I'd run electrics w/out motors though. Manuals used to go for <$250/pr when electrics were $400/pr. Not sure why the 964's are so high, but it looks like you'd save money on electric. I'm pretty sure you can put the old 944 motors into a manual 968 mirror & make them work, but I'm not positive.
Did those ebay handles that went for $255 come w/lock cylinders...? If so, that's worth it- otherwise, it's a bit steep, but like someone just said- not everyone knows about Sunset...

they included cylinders and a key. i figured it was worth it if you didnt have cylinders to swap, but oh well, more than i was ready to spend at that time, i can live with black handles now, i just ordered the mirrors. make a bigger difference in appearance anyway

Andrew- yeah, definately worth it- I would have possibly bought them just to have it all & then sold the handles to have newer cylinders- one of mine is slightly dented... rekey &... good as new... Anyway- you're right, the mirrors make a much bigger dif. I think script handles are really nice when painted body color- not quite as nice looking, but a touch lighter- you probably add back 1/2lb of the ~4lbs lost on the mirrors, by doing the 968 handles- IF that matters...? :-)
I found the manual mirrors in a Performance catalog years ago, but threw all of mine out recently. You can call Don Rosen (Porsche dealer in Philly)- they might have them- they sold me my 968 retrofit kit years ago for ~$380, before I had heard of sunset- they have really cheap prices too- they compete w/Sunset on many things, but overall, I think Sunset is a touch cheaper...
