944S2 Belt Question - Atlanta Recommendations?
Hi All - Got my first P-car ('90 S2 with 85K) about 6 months ago, and it's due for belt service. Anyone have experience with Performance Imports in Doraville or Auto Atlanta in Marietta for repair work? Any other recommendations in the ATL area?
Roughly what should I pay for timing/balance belt service?
Also, the cam chain and tensioner on this car were replaced by the PO about 20K miles (but 8 years) ago. Should I need to worry about these at all now?
Thanks for your help. Great info here on this board! Jon

If I was you, I would stay away from AutoAtlanta. I don't know if performance imports in Doraville has a good rep (I would search). I do all my own work, but when I get into a pickle I call my father's mechanic in Marietta. I would give Checkpoint Auto a call at 770-951-1777. They are very familier with the 944 series and are straight shooters. I have known them for over 13 years. I don't know much about the S2 belt changes, but it should be around 500-600 bucks. I would replace the pads due to age, but that's just me. Hope this helps.

Don't know anything about that area but the S2 procedure is exactly the same as the NA procedure as far as timing and balance shaft belts and then there is the additional inspection of the cam chain tensioner and pads. Hopefully someone from that area can chime in and help you out with shops, I think airbop is from around there. As far as the cam stuff goes I'd just open it up and inspect the pads, no need to change it after 20K unless there is a problem.

Just say no to "Mr 914" at autoatlanta.
I took my car to him the first week I had it and he said my
hesitating boost problem was a "Hole in the airbox" (worn spark plugs),
my shudder in the ride was a "Bent clutch disk" ($50 CV axle),
That my ebrake problem made the car unsafe to drive on the highway.
He told me that "silver rose" was not a factory color
he said that it was worth maybe 5k, and that it wasnt a Turbo S, and that it didnt have LSD. He told me that he would fix all of this for 6k, or he would buy the car from me for the same amount. All of the problems he cited (MANY more than I have mentioned here) Were either non existant or fixed for under $100. On top of that it took him 2 weeks to look at it.
TOTAL crook.
Checkpoint auto has been good for me as well.

Thanks for the advice guys. Not sure that I'm up to that much work myself, but I guess I should never say never... I've never done much auto maintenance, but I'm a reasonably quick study. Maybe I'll try an oil change first before getting into belt replacements.
Anyone have a recent good experience with German Car Repair in Roswell? Using the 'search' function, it looks like there are some positive comments in the archives about Jerry at GCR.
Thanks again.

I agree, stay far far far away from AutoAtlanta.
I asked them for a recommendation when trying to find a good place to turn have my 951 flywheel resurfaced. The place they recommended promptly screwed it up, and when I called AutoAtlanta back simply to tell them they shouldn't be recommending this place and perhaps buy another used flywheel, they totally denied making the recommendation. They then quoted me an exorbitant price for a used flywheel. I wrote a kindly worded complaint email through their web system addressed to the "CEO" and got back a very rude and confrontational response. Very unprofessional. I don't know how they stay in business.
