yesterday i sold an 89 944 with 78k miles on it. within the last ten thousand miles it got a new clutch, belts, motor mounts etc, etc, ball joints, etc. total parts and labor for the clutch were over 3000. with labor over 4000. sale price almost 5000.

see how quickly your 2000 car becomes a 7000 car. get the best car you can. the purchaser of my car got a car with clear coat issues, but all original paint as in no accidents ever to our knowledge for a few hundred bucks more than the money put into it over the last year.

Depends what you are looking for. For a driver it sounds nice.

But for a toy I would look to spend some more cash on a car that is nicer.

Maybe some slight discoloration on the pop-top? The body seemed to be in great shape.

My son is 2, so i think he needs an actual child seat, and though the 944 does not have air bags, I would feel better having him sit in the back. I would consider having 3 point rear belts installed, or perhaps installing a special strap as mentioned above? Some additional questions as if I can get the child seat thing straitened away, this may be really worth pursuing.
1) where can I get 3 point belts for the back seats?
2) where can I find info on the child seat made for this car as mentioned above?

thanks for all the great help guys!
bump?

And is this documented, or just a statement from the previous owner? Ditto with the clutch. Maybe the guy's on the up and up, but I'd feel better with a piece of paper that has numbers on it

Yeah, good idea... any seat made in the last few years has LATCH attachments... and cars made recently have to have anchor points for LATCH.

944s were before the LATCH requirement, but there are two metal loops sticking out of the carpet in the back, towards the rear of the hatch. That will work for the LATCH connector at the top of the seat if the strap is long enough (should be). I dunno if the rear lap belt will hold the seat sufficiently though, from side to side and forward movement - too much variance between child seat manufacturers.

IMO, this is too big of an investment (both the money for the car and your child's safety) not to take the seat in for a test fit - hey, a test fit is free, right? , or if you decide to buy the car anyway, you may want to check into the special seats Dan mentioned.

they go on ebay. Dave had a seat in the back of his 944 some years ago. I believe he had to flip the front seat forward the whole ride in order for his little guy to fit in the back.

I have an eddie bauer seat from my GTO and it didnt fit in the 944 because it had a base. I think we need a seat without a base.

Pete944 or 944pete posted a few pics of a seat he got to fit, and others posted pics at the same time. try a search of threads he started about two and a half years ago.

my 4 year old rides around in the front seat in his booster...84 no air bags...i like having a copilot and he likes sitting upfront! also the only reason for children to sit in back is due to airbags...and in case of emergancy i would rather have my child in reaching distance than in the back!

+1 best advice i can give someone buying a 944 is buy something that all the maintence has been kept up with. My porsche i bought had alot of work done to it but still needed some attention which i have been fixing on my spare time. Now the car should be flawless other then some minor things and i am having trouble selling it so far. I mean the car has $4000 of work into it and trying to sell for $3500 or best offer. Instead i get low offers of $2200 from people that never have seen it.

Three things that can be taken from this.
One: It is a buyers market for 944s.
Two: It is cheaper to buy a 944 that had a lot of work recently done than to buy one that needs (make that has not had) the work done recently.
Three: A seller of a car with work recently done needs to find the purchaser that did his/her homework, while the purchaser of a car that will need work has not done their homework.

My car sold for less than $2000 plus the parts and clutch labor. nevermind the timing belt, motor mounts etc. labor.

The car seat I have that fits in the back is the Britax Parkway Booster Car Seat with Side Impact Protection. I measured the back seat then ran over to Target and measured all their seats. This one of the few with a base that gets narrow enough at the rear to fit. I think it was like $100 last June.

The side impact protection is also great for when she falls asleep. The curved head rest keeps her head from tipping over.

thanks so much for the help guys! It seems like the child seat is doable from what I see here, so I am paying to have the car sent to a porsche specialist for a thorough evaluation. I'll post what the mechanic says, and based on your advice, i'll take things from there! this forum has been an amazing help, I felt like I was flying blind before I posted here.

i wonder if that car seat above could hold a 2.5 year old ~ 30lbs. I have to re-read the CT laws on the matter.

This says childer under 40 lbs should not use this seat; but then this here says it's for children 30-100 lbs, minimum height of 38" and maximum of 60" - and they look like the same seat! (google search)

MI law only requires child/booster seats until kids are 4 years old, but all the safety places say kids need a booster seat until 80 lbs or 4' 9 or 10 (don't remember exactly) - and most 4 year olds aren't that big. So consider the law in your state a bare minimum, not what is best or safe for your child.

Seat belts are designed for adult-sized folks and can cause internal and spinal injuries in children, if they aren't in a booster. Safest spot in cars is the middle back seat (assuming seat belt usage), next is the other rear seats, and front is least safe.
