Default What do I need to fix this leak?

I think this connection is leaking exhaust. What seal/gasket do I need? Is this common?

I think that is the rear cam tower gasket leaking. The rear engine hoist ring is sandwiched on with the cover. Relativley easy to change, but kind of a tight spot inbetween the firewall and DME harness. Cheap part, less than $5 at the dealer. Not uncommon for it to happen. Gasket is made out of cork and does leak.

So the rear cam tower is what's pictured in the red circle? I know there's a bunch of oil all over the place, but that's a separate issue. I'm having the engine resealed next week.

The thing circled in your picture is the exhaust manifold flange.

The cam tower is the thing that says PORSCHE on it, above the exhaust manifold. On the back of it you will see the engine hoist ring. The ring is sandwiched inbetween 3 bolts and the rear cover for the cam tower. The rear cover is sealed with a cork gasket that will cause the oil drip you have right now.

If it is an exhaust leak, you will probably hear a tapping sound and the car will not run well.

If the car starts to smoke after a minute or so than more than likely its the oil leak.

Yep, jon is correct. Cork gasket at the back of the cam box. The bolts are 10mm, as is everything else.

It looked to me like there was smoke escaping from the exhaust manifold flange. Would that be caused by a leaking cam tower (which I KNOW is leaking)? I think I'd like to replace the exhaust manifold flange, but clearly I hardly know what the f I'm talking about. I just ordered the kit below, maybe there's a manifold flange in it. I also do hear a tapping or clicking sound.

Your help is appreciated, thanks.

The flange gasket is just a metal o-ring. That kit will have a cam box seal, the grey thing in the picture, a well as the head gasket. Just do the whole thing. Getting the cam box fasteners off can be a real treat, particularly if they have never been off. Get yourself a nice wrench extender (ie a hollow pipe) and a good set of metric allen wrench sockets that will fit in the small holes at the top. I had to turn mine down with a lathe. Or, you can use a t-handle set.

For the cam box. Take some assembly lube and put that in the freezer. Use it to hold the lifters in place when you put the cam box back on. You can use hitac on the cam box seal. I did and it was good and sealed until I took the whole thing apart last may.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I bought that kit, a waterpump kit, and some other stuff. My mechanic is installing it all for $350. It sounded too fair of a price for me to do any of the work myself.
