Default Price on an '88 944?

The title kind of says it all.

I'm looking at a low mileage '88 944. Unfortunately, its an automatic and the car isn't close enough to inspect in person but the pictures I've seen all look great. The carfax checks out, too.

Thanks in advance everyone!

uh you need more details than that and probably some pics to get a good estimate.

Where are you located? Don't settle for an auto....

edit: it probably has low miles cause the p.o. dreaded driving it...

here is my ad for my 89 944. https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/326249-89-944-for-sale-by-member.html a few years ago i spoke to a porsche guru who published many porsche books. he told me the value of a porsche is not based on mileage like with a chevy, but on the parts in it.

how low is low mileage? the automatic also has a rubber disk that is expensive to buy and more expensive to replace. it is like a clutch, and a weak spot from age more than miles.

i am not far from JFK if you want to take a drive down. A rule of thumb is that an automatic is worth about 30% less than a manual.

welcome to the board.

Okay....so, I'll hold out for a stick.

Tom, what kind of damage did the leak do to the interior? Is there expensive damage? You mentioned something about not wanting spend another $5K on a station car.

One of the cars is on eBay. I'd provide a link but Rennlist won't let me since I have "too few" posts. Another, I've only seen poor pics from a pvt dealer in NY. I'm waiting for (more) and better images. Both cars are under 100K miles and automatics.

Thanks for the greetings! I've always been a huge Porsche fan but while I've always lusted from afar, I've never actually owned one.

Thoughts on my search?

Eric,
The damage isnt to the car. it is to my wallet. I have nodules on my lungs from working downtown the last six years. when it leaked, the water went under the bottom of the back seat, and a little mildew grew. I got rid of the mildew, and got rid of two small pieces of padding. I swapped hatches with another rennlister thinking that was where the water was coming from. turns out it was coming from the rear window. safelite glass sealed it.

while this was going on i found a 944 S2 for sale and added about 5k to what i will get for this car. My daily drive is three miles to the train station.

without traffic and without speeding excessively i am about an hour and fifteen minutes from easton or bridgeport ct.

here is the 944 in question.

why is your user name sue esponte if your name is eric? just curious.

The car looks to be in fair shape, but I wouldn't buy an auto 944.
Its already at $4k+.

I think Tom wants like $5700 for his, I would buy Tom's instead.
Yeah you are spending a little more, but Tom is a trusted party and his car is well documented.

I'll let Tom take it from here.

Okay, okay...I get it no auto.

I'd MUCH prefer a stick anyway. I just wasn't sure how easy it would be to find a low mileage stick.

Tom, I'm about 30 minutes from the Whitestone Bridge, so we're not far from one another at all. The timing this week and next is a bit rough for me, unfortunately (work and home; imminent deadlines on projects and "an under the weather" wife who is almost 8 months pregnant). I'll let you know when I can make a trip out to see it and if it fits into your schedule then great. I was hoping to find a Guards Red example, but I'm trying to keep my mind open.

Fair question. I started using it almost 8 years ago as a joke among a few friends and it just turned into an old habit. At this point, I have the screen name registered on many boards. Just to be clear, there is no Sue, no Mr. or Mrs. Esponte...its a play on the latin/legal phrase 'sua sponte' which basically means 'of one's own accord'. Long boring story but there you have it!

Oh, and thanks for posting the link! I'd much prefer to go with a 'trusted' party and I'd also prefer a stick over an auto, so I'm happy to take a look at Tom's car (assuming I can get out to LI soon).

Sounds great.

The best advice I can give you is become a full fledged paying Rennlist member.

The advice, support, knowledge, entertainment or just plain sillyness you get here will pay for itself ten times over.

Do you plan on turning your own wrenches?

Most here do.

oh yeah, www.clarks-garage.com is one of the most comprehensive step-by-step instructional pages on the web.

Be sure to click on the 944 faq link on clarks garage and give that a look over.

For the most part, yes. I'm far from a pro but I am more comfortable under the hood than I am with bodywork stuff (which is why I'd prefer a car in decent condition). I'm always game for giving something a try if I know I have access to the right information (and some instruction). Its been a while since I've had a car that I've been able to work on (aside from pet projects) so while I'm definitely a bit rusty, I'm certainly not afraid to get my hands dirty.
