Every repair, whatever the cost keeps the car from disappearing. Like the show says: dont crush them, restore them. Bought my 83 944 over ten years ago for $4500. Have put over $12k into it over those years. Much of it done via bartering. My expertise in exchange for labor costs. All I aid was parts for about 7 of those 10+ years. But the car runs great. Only needs paint and interior and oil pan gasket. But I dent bother. It runs great and is what it is. Fun to drive. Wouldn't trade it or sell it for a more trustworthy daily driver. This one gets me to work everyday. and has for over ten years. Hot as heck in the summer. Rattles like a can of nails. But its not an Accord, Solstice or Camry - thank God. I'll trade off the cup holders and cushy ride for the fun of this car everyday. I really enjoy my wife's Jeeps power steering. I have wide 17s and manual steering. Great down the road and curves, but parking lots are a pain. But I love the little car. Its so much fun to drive.

I bought my '89 2 1/2 years ago. I think the market was at it lowest point and the seller was eager to move. If those valuations are anywhere near correct I could make a profit today. And that includes money spent on maintenance and mods!
