it is a 3 way switch: always on, always off, on with hatch open.
There is a sensor for it on on of the hatch shocks. wiggle the connector if it doesn't come on with the hatch open.

If your trunk light isn't working, try popping it out of the panel and inspect the contacts and how the switch works. It's actually pretty flimsy. See if things are making contact at all, and if there's corrosion. Remember that this light will turn on whether or not you have the key in the ignition, so disconnect your battery first.
Yep. That's really stupid, I think. Not only will you be killing your battery with all those parking lights on, but the hood light is put in a place where it doesn't illuminate anything you'd try to fix on the roadside at night anyway. They figured that out for the 968, putting it by the hood latch.

And the light is put above the fuse box . that is SMART.

I don't think about the hood light - I've never checked to see if it even works, as I keep a flashlight in the glove box.
But the threads above have me thinking... it seems like it would be trivial to disconnect it, pull the standard fixture out, and solder in a new fixture with it's own switch. This thing could have a magnet so you could stick it anywhere the wires could reach in the engine compartment.
Or am I nuts?

if you cant fix the problem,on the road side you call a tow truck and take your Pcar to your trusted mechanic

Ok...does this make sense....
With my car off and key not in the ignition, the trunk light does not turn on no matter what setting I try.
With my key turned to the 'accessories' indent, the light operates correctly.
I know this is not really important, but what should I be checking for to get this fixed and operating as it once was? Or is it working correctly?

The trunk light should work even with the key out. When you have the key in, at the accessory position like you said, does the light work on 2 positions of the switch, or just 1? One position should make it be always on, and the other should make it only be on when you open the hatch.
