My friend has one with some kind of hybrid turbo on it and a custom intercooler. He has outrageous power claims for that thing... What are they usually making with some mods?

My friend says the stock 7M engine that the U.S. cars got aren't very reliable for making big HP numbers. I think his car (1JZ installed) was doing around 500-600hp with a single turbo conversion bigger injectors and some other stuff. Since then I think he went to full standalone and numerous other things. His friend had a 1000hp Lexus SC300 with a 2JZ Supra engine, it was built to be a drag car, and had a stealthy roll cage, fuel cell, and a cutoff switch on the back bumper. On the outside the car looked pretty much stock with the exception of being lowered, and having Mark 4 Surpa wheels and brakes on it.

A coworker has one of these, and my favorite part is the enormous injection-molded grey plastic dash that has faux-stitching in it. Like you have a full leather interior, but the whole thing is made out of one piece of plastic.
I guess that was high-class in the '80s.

7mgte- they are actually pretty sturdy motors- not as much so as the 1jz that is the predecesor for the 2jz the newer supras had though. Mine w/ custom intercooler lines, boost controller and some airmeter modifications was right around 300rwhp- Ive seen them up to 500hp reliable.

yeah Porsche sued mazda a long time ago for making the body of the 2nd gen rx-7s so much like the 944 - not sure what ever came of it but you can look it up on the internet.

Before I moved to Riverside only one of my friends was into cars, and he had an 86 RX-7. I had my 85 944. We always compared our cars. It was amazing how very different they are, despite similarities at first glance.
They had nothing in common mechanically, except they both had front struts, and both had convoluted intakes. The rx7 has rear struts, dual exhaust, rotary engine, tranny bolts right to the engine, the driveshaft was different (the floating kind with u-joints), and it had a regular sunroof. Body details are very different too - the headlights aren't linked together, and the bulbs always face forward; there's no spoiler, and the hatch glass is much smaller (read: lighter); the door handles are flush and pull-type; smoother nose; aero-ish window-mounted mirrors...
When you break it down, rx-7s and 944s are nothing alike. But they still look alike.

that's the same story with me and my friend, he had an '86 RX7, i had an '84 944. it was sad that when we'd race, we'd go shift-for-shift, because the 944 was very disadvantaged in the weight department. i'm sure if he'd haev been driving my car, and i his, it would have been a different story.
now he's got a FD3S, and i've got a 951.
and he's faster

7m head didnt lift- it warped. And bad! Problem was heat. The way the coolant flowed through the head IIRC.
Oh and its not a 931 nose, its a 951 nose w/ 931 vents welded into it...took me a few hours to finish myself.

Wow, you matched your color really well!
Juan, what do you mean about the weight? I once got duped into racing him (my rx7 friend). I say 'duped' because I never race, ever. My brother and I (collectively 500 lbs) were in my 85 944 and he (about 150) was in his rx7 FC. No mods on either car. I was pulling away SLOWLY.
And yes his car was indeed a wankel ricer. It's funny though - another thing both our cars had in common was, there are next to NO power mods available. Our only options were to get engine swaps (rx8/968 engine).
