There are 3 type of 944 NA headers

83-85 or 86. Cast Iron... Not sure when they stopped making these, but somewhere near the 85.5 cuttofff.

85.5+ = Type 1... Tube headers
87+ = Type 2 ... Tube headers... same tube headers, but reinforced 1-4 pipe junction.

Racers like the tube headers due to weight savings (10lbs) and the percecption that they are worth 1-2 hp.

Unless you are buying a well engineered tubular manifold stay away from them. The weight savings is not worth changing them out when the crack. I have built maybe 20 for turbo applications on other cars. I have learned that unless you use thick walled tubing and add some extra support brackets for insurance they will eventually crack. The heat and stress is too much otherwise.

I went through 2 sets of cracked tubular manifolds before I settled on a set of cast iron ones.

Even on a race car, I'd run cast.
