Its a very common ring and pinion failure. An Used tranny will cost you more than a couple hundred from a reputable source but its your best option as a tranny rebuild will cost more than your car if done right.

i talked to a shop today over the phone trying to get a price quote but never called me back since the parts place didn't call him back. He said it sounds liek a main shaft bearing since the knocking happens even in neutral. I was hoping to get some more input from this thread.

You WILL spend more than $1000 on any 944 transmission work you do. You might as well get a used cheap transaxle for $4-500.

well i guess i am having a transmission shop that my dad knows going to open the transmission up and see whats exactly wrong. He has worked on porsche and audi transmission before so i trust his work. He is going to be doing all of that for free and then let me know after how much it will cost. There is a salvage yard willing to also sell me a used 944 transmission for 450 that has around 130k on it.

I wonder why I type out suggestions at all at times. I've been down this road, I'm well aware of the costs involved.

i just don't understand how a 944 tranny can cost so much to fix. What makes it so different then other 5 speed tranny's?

It's a transaxle, and it has porsche/audi parts numbers.

You can hear clunking at the trans end? So it's not the clutch rubber center?

If it is the trans, Best Foreign in the Springs has a late 85 944 trans. Price is listed as $call. 1-800-624-7364

Good luck,
-Joel.

does it have to be a specific year for the transmission. I found a 944 at my dads buddy's tow yard and since the guy doesn't want to pay the towing fees he is willing to let the whole car go for that price but its an earlier model. Thanks in advance.
