are you saying it is around the first white mark? what year is your car? I have the early round guages and my car is just to the right of the first white mark in stop and go traffic, and to the left on the highway, and everything seems fine. Check out the link below, its from www.clarks-garage.com

My car is a 86' 951....

and yea it's RIGHT ON THE WHITE MARK

I warm up the car and temp is normal...

25 miles later on the highway....the temp slowly drops to the WHITE MARK

so yeah it would be around....

60-40 degrees.....which was the air temperature at the time

so, after you drive on the highway, it reads 80 C, or the thick mark at 60 C?
If your temp drops when driving on the highway that sounds normal.
If anything its a thermostat problem, not the waterpump.

edit: those temps are in Celcius, not Fahrenheit, if your air temp was 40-60 C I am sorry for you .

That sounds like it is running a little cool, but then again, it is winter, so the cold air running through your radiator may be the cause of it.

Did this just start, or has it been going on for some time?

If you stop the car and let it idle, does the temp climb back up?

If the temp goes back up, then think really hard about when it did start, like around the time it got cold?
It has been pretty mild though in IL.
Either way, I would wait for another turbo owner in cold climate to verify gauge behavior (Paging Dr. Porschephile 924!) before you tear it apart.

It could just be an old thermostat, since when water pumps fail, the car overheats

It souds like the car is getting warmed up though, cause if it wasn't that would be bad.
I have heard that when thermostats fail they don't let the car warm up at all...

Sounds like my 86 951. Mine's been that way since I bought it and I've never concerned myself with it. Mine cruises at just above the 1st mark, hits the half mark when idling, and sometimes gets near the 3rd mark in Summer right before the fans kick on. Personally I wouldn't worry about it.

Happens to me in the cold... if I get a wild hair, I'll get it boosting for a while, and that'll warm it up... but on a nice, subdued drive to work, everything is cold...

Happens to a good friend in his NA too...

My 951 does this too, it's correct. Thats how it should be. Mine has only reached the first mark once.
