Default Blown Tranny (update w/ pics)

I am sure I am going to get nasty grams, but understand I feel really bad about this on every imaginable front and already know I am a complete and profound idiot.

Brought my three bottles of Redline into E-Z Lube today. Wanted my car running perfectly for tonight's So Cal GTG (my first). I usually do my own changes up in the desert but I am here in LA and thought it might be a good time for the tranny to get her's. Well, you know where this is going: They stripped the fill plug and drained the oil and didn't tell me and let me drive off Went about three miles, noticed noise, called tow truck, friend welded a 17mm bolt, filled with oil, clunk, clunk, clunk.....

To make matters worse, I wasted almost three quarts of Redline.

Michael

That stinks.

The more time that goes by, the less likely they are to buy your story and take care of it. I would have called them back right away when it happened, right there by the side of the road. Now that so much time has elapsed and you tried to check it out and refill it, you could have issues with your claim to them.

Best of luck! Man I feel for you. Its stories like this that keep me away from those type of establishments............

Theyre all about getting cars in and out, they dont care about the vehicle, and often skip over the little things.

EZ lube is not assuming any responsibility.

Moving forward part. My goal, when I realized this occurred, was to secure another transmission. I called a source about a tranny before I called the tow truck. That said, I got a beat on a tranny and have someone savvy to help me put it in. Hope to have it in by week's end. I am very lucky if also really stupid. It will cost me some parts and some time.

Memo to self, do it yourself.

Thanks for consoling words.

Sounds like you got a real lube job.

You at least owe it to us to post their pertinent information so we don't even think about going there...

How about "Never ever go to any of those places, ever?" Does that cover it? Any address, any city. None of them. Not with a Porsche. Just say no.

Naturally the lube place is not _assuming_ liability. You will have to make it tough for them.

Sorry about your tranny, +1 for never going to those places. I have had oil changed there before when I was living in an apt and had no choice.
But I've had them want to replace new 5-year coolant in a new car with because they thought all coolant was green, crush the rubber gasket of oil filter so tightly there was metal to metal contact, etc.

I had a friend who lost a tranny, they forgot to tighten the drain bolt. Took some perseverance and threats, but they came through eventually. They were saying it was worn anyway and not their fault, but he came up with all his on-schedule Amsoil receipts.

There was a story locally about a gal where they forgot to tighten the oil drain bolt, the place eventually replaced her engine, but it took months and one of the local investigative reporters, who plastered the story in his column, named the place, talked to managers, regional and district managers, etc.

Default Update with picture

Apparently, you can drive 4 - 5 miles on a dry transaxle after all. Just when I could not feel more idiotic, as it happens, it was the axles making noise and the original tranny was perfectly fine (swapped it out last week):

Pros:
Did a transmission job
Extra tranny

Cons:
I think the other one was a bit quieter.

Here the original box in the back of my Jeep -

Tough lesson, but at least you have a tranny to recoup some out of.

I doubt I'll find myself in that position, extra stubborn DIY'er here, a call from the side of the road informing them that it's being towed to the stealership for an inspection would get some attention real quick!

Ofcourse throw in that you have an open door policy with investigative reporter xxxx xxxxxxx at station xx ...

My brother drove about 20 miles with a dry transaxle in his GTI. It was an accident of course. After the 20 mi he filled it up and it still works fine.
