Trans rebuild cost??
Battled my crappy syncro’s long enough. Caused an exciting high speed spin when my third gear locked up on the track.
So what’s the typical cost I can expect to pay??

I was going to go that route, but I think its a bit risky, who knows what a used tranny has been through? It might be close to the same shape that your previous one was in, or a syncro is on the verge of going? Unless it had just been rebuilt, I wouldnt buy a used one.
Instead of paying 1000$ to get a used tranny and installed, I'd spend the extra 500$ and know that mine is in great conditon.

Check out out the used market. The transaxle in my car went south last summer and I got a price for 1200 for a used one from one place, Porschapart, and I checked with Whaletail and they had one as well and they had rebuilt it the year before and it was 1200 as well.

Rather not go the used route. I have a quaife in the current trans, and not sure I want to mess with the unknown. I was hoping it was going to be closer to 1K.

Your gut is right. Rebuild. If you track a car, you need the extra comfort of knowing it is all done properly. There are a lot of guys that can go in and jumble around and get it back together, but you need someone who will replace all the bearings, synchros, seals, make good judgements as to what else is necessary, and then spend the time to shim everything carefully.
That guy would be the aforementioned Kevin Gross. I've known Kevin for MANY years, and he is tops. Fussy, detail oriented, fastideous. He did the box in my track car, and the one in my friend's 375RWHP Turbo (among 100s of others). None better.
Your rebuild might be more than the $1700 I paid (4-5 years back) because you might very likely need the gear and selector ring for any gear where the synchro has been bad for a long time.

Kevin Gross did my tranny rebuild as well, and I can't say enough good things about him. Expensive? Yes, but well worth it.
