Default 88 924S No Start-Fixed??

So, since my grand adventure last week, I parked the car and did not start it. I wanted to fix my fuel line a little better. Today I fixed it according to xsboot90's tips and tried to start'er up.

No go.

I tried to shoot a little starting fluid into the j-boot.

Nope.

I went to pull the plugs to check for fuel smell. One of the spark plug wires broke off in by hand. Great. Spent 20 minutes fiddling around and putting the magnecor wires I have back on, checked the plugs.

Plugs looked clean, but dry. No fuel smell.

I was alone, so I couldn't safely check for spark. I will check once the GF is home. I have a feeling either my fuel pump went out finally (a new one is on the way anyway) or the injectors died. I am leaning towards pump, since I did get a little firing once or twice while trying to start.

Is there any trick to jump the fuel pump into running so I can go round back and listen? or do I have to drag my GF outside?

thanks!

Can you feel or hear the fuel pump running (touch it and it should vibrate). If not, try bypassing the DME relay. The relays do go bad and will cause no fuel conditions. Alot of people seem to be having this problem as of late.

Thanks guys. I'm such a 944 noob. I know how to jumper 30-87 on a 928. Duh. Thanks for that link. I should have checked clark's garage.

Off to check my DME.

Hmmmmmmm... now why the hell did I not think of that when we were working on that?

Also, did you check the reference sensors on the bell housing?

you can also try the paper trick on the relay- getting the jumper under the steering wheel takes some flexible acrobatics.. i have taken the roof off so my feet stick thru when attempting the jumper.

yeah I know Geoff we shoulda tried swapping DMEs. Oh well.

Anyone got a pic of the reference sensors? Or the connectors?

I have my DME in my hand right now. It looks pretty new. About to crack it open.

a cold solder joint is difficult to spot. I'd resolder every connection. Time consuming but worth it.

Have someone turn the key (as if to start) and stick your head underneath the car and behind the rear passenger side wheel - yo should be able to hear the fuel pump working.

DAMN! This thing is brand spanking new. I guess I'll go and try a jumper. See If I can hear the pump or if it will start.

Okay, tried the jumper, pump runs. It does buzz slightly, don't know if that's normal. I can hear the fuel all the way up in the engine bay. Still no start. Will verify spark, air tomorrow. Unless my injectors are stuck shut, I have fuel.

I was also doing some reading up on clark's garage, and I will run a fuel pressure test when i get home.
Why not?
I have a brand spanking new fuel pressure test gauge kit and metric adapters that I have yet to use.

So I thought I had the right metric adapter for the FP guage, turns out no.
BUT! I was able to fab one up rather quickly. Anyhoo, I did the fuel pressure test and I showed 40 psi.
the spec is: 2.5 bar +/- 0.2 bar (36 psig +/- 3 psig), so I guess I'm within spec...

I tried to start'er up with the jumper. Nope. I replaced the jumper with the DME. Tried to start it up and it started on the second try!

WOW I was so happy.

I think it was the reference sensors, since I did wiggle the connections a little. The wires felt pretty stiff and the sensors themselves are pretty dirty on the outside.

The bad news is my starter is sounding really bad. Hurry up new starter!!!

How high is the tach supposed to move during cranking? When it wouldn't start I noticed that the tach would not move. Now it 'twitches' a little.
What about the speedometer? While driving, mine is shaky at low speeds and at higher speed I calculated it reads 10mph too high.
Are any of these indicators of speed/reference sensor problems?

Borys, the speedometer is driven off of the front left wheel. if that cable binds, it'll make a jumpy speedo... and you might want to fix your odometer gear
