Default Need help with ordering timing belt kit for 88 924S

I would post this on 924board.org but they are not as fast at replying as rennlist. I need to order a timing belt kit from Pelican for an 88 924S i'm supposed to pick up next week. I called them up and they want an engine number cause there are two different kits? The car is with the seller, and it's not located at his house, so If I ask him to get it he probably wont be able to until like tomorrow, if he can find the dang engine number. So, can anyone clarify this for me? The car is a 5spd and I will be changing the water pump as well. I would really appreciate a fast reply so I can order this today! Thanks!

So, I called pelican back and they said the difference is in the water pump roller, there are different widths. I think I need the 46mm one. Anyone?

Hey;

The difference is in the water pump. Most 85.5 and later cars came with the updated pump. It has a belt guard fence the sits between the upward and downward runs of the belt to keep the teeth apart if you don't keep the belt adjusted right.

The early pump uses a small 32mm steel cam belt idler roller. The update pump uses a much larger 46mm plastic idler roller.

Thats what I thought. I told him that since I am buying a water pump as well to replace, would it solve the whole issue if I buy a matching kit and pump (46mm)? And he said no, that it does not solve it. He then went on to ask me if my car was a 924S or S2.

Hey;

The roller spec you are looking at is diameter, not width. Your new car has the narrow T-belt and rollers. The S2 has a wider T-belt and rollers. If you said '88, he should know it is not an S2, and that it has a narrow T-belt.

Thanks. My point with was that there is no 924 S2 and he should know that, so maybe he doesn't know entirely what he's talking about? I told him 3 times 88 924 S. So I should get the kit with the 46mm roller and 46mm pump right?

Well, you could order the updated pump and roller, but then you don't know if you have the belt guard (which is something you order _once_ when the pump is updated) and reuse when you change the water pump. If your water pump has been updated, it's in there, if not, it isn't.

In fact...

I may remember that if you get a new Porsche pump, it will be the updated one because they do not have the early pump anymore. Seems like I remember that being the case.

I always use new factory pumps.

well, when I was talking to pelican they said if I get the VIN and call a dealer, the dealer can get me the engine number. I got the VIN and called a dealer. They said VIN is not valid. I checked it with 924.org vin decoder and it came back valid 924. I also compared it to the VIN's in the 924.org registry and it looks like an early 88 VIN. The VIN is WP0AA0920JN450709. WTF!

OK, I am getting somewhere. In PET, it lists the engine code for 88 924S as M44.09 (5spd). The range of engine numbers for M44.09 is 46J00001-46J60000. So that is way above their specified cut off points. I'm 99% sure I got the 46mm roller.

My 87 924S has the newer style pump with the belt guard fence. Therefore your 1988 is the newer style UNLESS someone changed the motor sometime in the cars past.

Don't take this wrong. You could have called Paragon instead and all this confusion could have been avoided. I've done battle with Pelican many times. Their spreadsheets have several errors in them, at least on BMW parts. Jason at Paragon knows exactly what you need trust me.

I actually wanted to buy from Paragon, but for some reason I thought they don't sell water pumps. Damn. I am definitely calling Paragon tomorrow. They are in Texas, so they are closer to me to = faster shipping. Yes! Should I ask for Jason when I call?

Well, I called up Paragon this morning and spoke to Jason. He knew everything I needed! One of the most satisfying purchases I ever made! I even saved money too! The entire purchase with 2 day shipping cost the same as my Pelican shopping cart without the shipping! Okay, not the same, but within a couple bucks!
