Default 944 for my dad?

Alright, i barrowed my fathers truck today and i traded him my subaru. While this is not a common practice i would say he drives it 3-5 days a month. Every day he does i hear about how he likes the car, and how you can feel the steering and the brakes are good, etc. Basically its not a truck.

I've tried to convince him to buy something, ANYTHING thats not a truck, but with the them building a house he has very little money to blow on a car (that and my mother would kill him for spending out of their house fund). Now that I'm stuck again with this beast, I feel that i need to fix the problem ASAP.

Solution? an 944 but i do have a few questions (and I'm sure i can search and find most of these but i want opinions).

1) He is a handy man and LOVES to tinker with things so i "think" he would not mind working on the car
2) they are moving to a place that cant even spell porsche let alone knows what a 944 is.
3) I'm thinking an S or S2 would be nicer overall than a regular 944, it has more power and would probably be in better shape
4) Do 944's make good summer daily drivers, grocery getters, etc?
5) What would break on the interior of a car this old? (I know all the engine/clutch/etc problems they can have, but i have a race car so no interior)
6) for the money (2-4k) could i buy my father a reliable, 944 that should not have any major problems? (edit.. i see there is no way I'll get a good s2 for 4k lol)

Thanks guys! oh and my father is 51 if that matters.

S2, 951 or 968 are great cars. Budget 8k to 16k for Nice car from an S2 to 968.

Below 8k and cars start needing alot of work.

EEK! i cant afford 8k now.. hmm, looks like I'll start looking for a regular 944 maybe something in need of a little work.

Curious, where would that be? I was thinking that there are likely some local Rennlisters that could help out with stuff if really needed. That's a big plus for Porsche ownership.

Heck, yeah! I drive my '86 NA daily from May through mid-November.
5) What would break on the interior of a car this old? (I know all the engine/clutch/etc problems they can have, but i have a race car so no interior)
Wear items, like the driver's seat, shift ****, and steering wheel. Cracked dash, of course... might be OK for most guys, your dad might want Robb D's recovered dash or Paul Champagne's recovered steering wheel. Depending on where he is moving to, he'll likely want working AC, too... and you may need to check into doing something about the gauge brightness if he'll be driving at night.
6) for the money (2-4k) could i buy my father a reliable, 944 that should not have any major problems? (edit.. i see there is no way I'll get a good s2 for 4k lol)
Wait for the right car... my '86 was $4,200 a year and a half ago, new clutch... just needs some minor cosmetic stuff.

Thanks guys! oh and my father is 51 if that matters.
Is he a big guy? Big thighs or a bit of a gut might cramp things. Plus, I have a pain in my left knee for the first week or so when I get into my 944 from the way I have to bend to drop into the car.

I would recommend an early n/a. No expensive turbo to worry about and many parts are cheaper than later n/a cars, and as you know, the early ones can be just as fun to drive as the laters.

If you are on a budget the 924s isnt a bad way to go. Plus its faster than the 944.

A 924S has the 944 engine. It's really debatable to the point where driver skill and launch technique would come into play- I really doubt it has noticeably better acceleration unless you're at really high speeds where drag comes into play.

Theoretically, and according to Porsche literature, the 924S top speed is a few mph more than an 8-valve na 944. The 944 hips add a little drag.

I would DEFINITELY stay away from the 16V engine in this case. Parts for the 8V NA cars are easier to find and often cheaper; mechanics actually know them, if you run into something you can't handle or need advice on. This is most important in areas where Porsches are not popular ... I speak from experience.
