Default Guage swapping help with lights

alright, I swapped the guages between the two cars today. Here is what it looks like.
Just for ref. my 86 cluster (works fine) has the 154k on it and the 85.5 cluster has 95k on it (no tach, speedometer, or odo)
I appears the cluster is fine because both work in my 86.
I put a bulb in the oil part of the 85.5 cluster (my 86 does not have one?) and it will not go out.

The order of the photos is this:
85 in 85 (off)
85 in 85 (on)
85 in 86 (off)
85 in 86 (on)
86 in 85 (off)
86 in 85 (on)
86 in 86 (off)
86 in 86 (on)

also when the 85.5 cluster is in and I turn the key the tach and speedo do jump a bit like they are going to work. I am guessing that they are getting power just no signal.

hmmm...it appears the cluster is from an 87 then that is in the 85.5. no wonder those bulbs were taken out! otherwise it looks like it is out of oil!

alright, I found this connector that looks like the one I have been reading about in the rennlist posts while doing some searching. I unplugged it and it stopped my tach on the black car (86) so I guessing I have the right one.
On my black car when I hook a multimeter up to the two pins and check for voltage I get
.5V with key on pos #2
1.5V with car at idle and running.

with the 85.5 (trouble car)
13.8V with key in pos #2
same thing with car running.

where does this go? I am guessing I can put the cluster back in. this is not the problem.

The tach signal is the green wire with the black stripe on that connector

The odometer not working is a result of the speedometer not working, that is unless the odometer gear is broken.

the tach does not work and the speedometer does not work. when swapping the clusters is was clear that the actual cluster is not the problem. I am looking for where the bad signal is coming from.
It appears I am getting a short somewhere. the two wires in the red connector were showing the battery voltage (13.8V)

The only wire in the red connector that is a signal for the tach is the green/black stripe wire.
