Default Cam tower bolts, and a question... NOW WITH PHOTO!

To zinc or not to zinc - as in, if you could would you put stainless cam tower bolts on?

It's a presentation thing. Chrome/silver powdercoated camtower would look nice with stainless, no?

Personally I go for the functional industrial strength look. Anytime I have to worry about underhood blemishes I feel I should be driving the car instead of worrying about the dust. Personally I prefer yellow-zinc bolts but that's me..

Yellow zinc would be cool - stainless hardware is cool (I should know), but I wouldn't use it there.

Stainless bolts into aluminum head? You're asking for trouble. Trouble spelled Galvanic Corrosion.

Unless those bolts are exposed to a water passage somewhere in the head there's no electrolyte to feed the corrosion. The bi-metallic couple between SS and aluminum will be no different than black oxide treated carbon steel studs which will corrode just from moisture in the air around the threads. A yellow zinc-dichromate steel bolt would still be the best choice as the two are closer on the galvanic scale.

I've had SS exhaust studs in my car for a week now and they look GREAT!

Also sounds better now that we tig welded the crack around the exhaust pipe flange.......

Here's the deal... went to the local place in Tampa called Tyson bolt and supply. They have EVERYTHING. I got 15 m8x35 zinc bolts, with washers, and 20 m6x assorted with washers, all zinc...

Now normally this would cost a pretty hefty amount... and I've paid a lot for these in the past, upwards of 6 bucks or more a piece for the m8x35... but I got all of the above items for...

$12.52.

Dude that's a great price! So you decided to use Zinc - I think it's important that there be some things that don't match the color of everything else. If everything is silverish, it looks like one blob of similar metal. The zinc will add a touch of componentization.

That's not a real word but whatever.

The bolts actually look stainless -- I asked the folks and having a zinc bolt doesn't equate to having a yellowish tint. Of course, I will PM you on this thread after the parts are installed to show you...

Also, they confirmed that you would NOT want to have stainless on the head... so props to my man Headhunter... mixing metals. Sharky - not sure what that means with regard to the exhaust studs...
