What grade of gasoline do you use in your NA?
Just wondering, I'm not sure what I should use in my 944. I'm not driving it yet, I'm waiting to have it towed in to a porsche shop to get the belt tension checked but I did have to fill it up and i used regular 87 octane gas.
87 octane is the lowest then it goes to 89, 92 and 94 I think. The previous owner told me I can mix higher octane gas with the regular.
so is it okay to just use 87 or would the car run better with 89 or 92.
thanks.

On Thursdays Esso stations set their premium grade (91 octane) fuel at the same price as their mid grade (89 octane) fuel so I top-up the tank every Thursday with premium.
I think Petro-Canada and Ultramar do the same thing on Thursdays as well.

it doesn't matter either way unless you got something that would require it, like a chip. stock, dont worry about it
edit: also forgot to mention what i run, on the 924S i run 91/93 and in the 944 87. (the 924S has some upgrades)

I used to run 92 as mine would run crappy on 89, but i have gone to 87 and it runs just fine.
89 seems to make it run crappy and get worse fuel economy ( the 10% ethanol content mabey???)

As mentioned, unless you have a chip, just run 87.
Personally, I use 89, as its what I use in everything.
I can't remember, but I do think there are more detergents in some companies higher octane gas, which may help.

My 89 N/A requires atleast 90 acording to the owners manual. That's because it's running 10.9 to 1 compression. The higher the compression the higher the octane rating to keep the engine from knocking.
I have a digital copy of the owners manual for either an 86 or 87 model N/A and it required only 87 octane. The compression was only 9.7 to 1 that year, so it depends on your year.
Hope this helps.

IIRC, my owners manual for my '87 says regular is just fine. The only reason I run premium (I forget if it's currently 91 or 93) is because of the chip, which I'd remove in a heartbeat if this car was my daily driver.

I used to run 87 in my '87 9.7:1 ratio 944. The car was chipped and i went from 93 gradually back down to 87 as per FRWilks instructions. Blew the headgasket 20k miles or so later, lots of detonation on the #3 cylinder, can tell by the fire ring having lots of little dents in it. Whether or not it was related is anyones guess, but the detonation on the #3 cylinder and the fire ring splitting on that same cylinder is enough to convince me.
Only 93 from now on for my car. Cheap insurance and peace of mind.

My NA doesn not like anything less than 91. My understanding of the beast is that knock sensors retard the ignition when it detects detonation and the retarding reduces power.

93, but then again this car only see's high RPM's for 30 minute sessions. so i like to play it safe. and $40 in fuel will last me an entire weekend!!!! Hows that for gas mileage!

When I ran my 84 NA I used 87. Car was stock no chip.
my 84/87 race car runs 91 pump gas. I might be ok on 87, but why risk it when I have chip and run it hard.
