I am doing a clutch job on my 86 944, got most everything removed, except the bellhousing... Ouch, I ache!
I tried to remove the speed sensers, but they seem to be locked in place. Tried twisting, pulling but still they won't come out. And yes, their retaining bolts are out.
What the story? Any clues to how to get them buggers out?
Thanks in advance...

I've heard of everything from sledge hammers to grenades. They are a bugger. And you have to be very careful not to bust the housing. There was actually a recent thread on it, do a quick search and see what others have done to defeat the sensor.

if they spin and nothing then im afraid you might have broke them mine twisted but wouldnt come out and they were ruined. You might have to take the housing off and then punch them out. Make sure to notch the bellhousing so you wont have to take them off again.

I think sensers are still ok, they turn, but with a lot of resistance. They also still have about 950 ohms of continuity, so I think they are ok.
I am going to try to try the WD-40 trick, I'll let you all know what happens. But not tonite, I have already had 2 fun filled, knuckle breaking nights already this week. It's really amazing how much torque it took to break the transaxle to drive tube bolts free. Other bolts seemed to be just snug by comparison.
Clutch jobs are sooo much fun on 944's, everybody should have to do at least one.

remember not to force them to turn and if they wont come out take the sensor block off and notch the bellhousing then you can set the height of the sensors and then put the bellhousing back on

Heya Ed! I was just down in my old stomping grounds, Mansfield/Lexington last week. I miss the nice roads and race track access! I suppose it is a little too late to offer my (West of Cleveland) lift for wrenching, I just finished one of my clutches on it last week. IF the WD40 fails (I hope it doesn't) you may have to remove the whole sensor bracket. It will be a relative piece of cake to re-gap with the bellhousing off.

I tell you what I will certainly notch mine before it goes back in.

On the '88 944 na clutch job I just found, the hardes thing was the two socket head screws that mount the speed and reference sensor housing to the block. Have fun getting those two out, since there is no wrench clearance at all back there. There was a sleeve on this housing that went into the clutch housing, so this needed to be loosened on mine. It's not mentioned in any instructions. Hopefully, yours is different, and you don't need to deal with this.

Well, I soaked the sensors with some liquid wrench and let them set overnite. They are still not willing to cooperate, I am going to try one more trick...
Just in case I have to remove the reference sensor bracket, what are the specs for the distance between the flywheel teeth and the sensor? And yes, the bracket looks like a bear to remove, I think I'll be making up a special 1/4 inch allen socket to get in there...
Hey what they heck, the job will just about be over when I get the bellhousing off.... The hard part is over....

If you can get the allen bolts out that hold the bracket, then when you loosen the bellhousing, you can get the whole mess out in one piece. There is a roll pin collar that holds the bracket and keeps you from pulling it out. Pulling the bellhousing back about 1/2 inch will clear this. Also if you forget to install the speed sensor bracket before you put the bellhousing in, you can press that roll pin coolar into the bracket and the allen head bolt will push it back into the block. I got all mine back out after days of hell and then reinstalled before I read about notching the bellhousing. Did this notching trick never occur to the factory??
