Just for info it's the "X" relay if all the guages go out.

Would that cover other issues too (i.e., would I notice other things wromg if it was out)? Or just the gauges?

Mr. **** is correct. If the guage cluster goes dead, the x-relay is the one. If that is what is going on with your car, the sunroof will not work either.

Try replacing the "X" relay. It worked for my car.

Just one more thing. I bought the "X" relay from a VW dealer. The Porsche dealer gave me the cross ref. part number for VW, no more than $7.00 for the part. I tried looking up the number but could not find that info in all my papers. Sorry.

Just look at the car. The part number for VW is 141951253B. I bought (2) relays the same part number. One was for the "X" relay "G-14" and the other was for ignition relay 15 "G-2" I have a 1985/2 944.

well the sunroof works and so does the fuel, temp, battery. Oil pressure still pegs out at max. I think the wires are crossed.
I am guessing the relay is not the problem. maybe I should swap sending units from the transmission.

Thanks for all of that info. My cluster was intermittent, but after playing around in the pass footwell and fuse box, it went out completely, so maybe i finished the x relay off. I'll order a new one. thanks!

Got the relay from a VW dealer today (actually bought 2 since they were only $5/piece). THe only differen I could see was that it was rated at 40 amps instead of 50. Anyway, I swapped them out...and...nothing! Still no gauges!

Sorry to hear that the guages did not work. Go on Pelican and ask the same question. There's a guy So Cal who is great at electrical. How about the fuses?

I checked all the fuses, they are fine. The oil pressure has to be on wrong because it pegs out max pressure as soon as I turn the key to Pos 2. I still have no tach, speed, or odo.

Is it possible the connectors were damaged when the cluster was pulled? The wires did not look all too sturdy when I removed mine. Did you try cleaning the connector? I cleaned off the connections on the cluster before I reinstalled.

Check the connectors on the back of the instrument cluster. The middle one that goes vertically is the one for the speedometer. I would unplug the connector and replug it. Make sure the contacts the plug goes over are in the proper place and making good contact.
